Introducing Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X: The Midsize Motorbikes

The British motorcycle brand has just introduced two new models, the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, to global users. These are products developed in collaboration between Triumph and Baja, a motorcycle brand in India. The new models will first be sold in India and then in some other markets.

The two 400cc motorcycles inherit the design and styling of the two 900cc models, including the Speed Twin 900 and the Scrambler 900. The competitors of the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are the KTM 390 Duke, Kawasaki Z400 or Husqvarna Svartpilen 401.

Triumph equips the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X with a 398cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, producing 39.5 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, maximum torque of 37.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Both bikes use a tubular steel frame, LED lighting, analog instrument cluster with LCD display, 17-inch rear wheel, and a 13-liter fuel tank. They also feature a dual-channel ABS braking system, adjustable traction control, and a USB-C charging port.

Triumph Speed 400 is equipped with a cast aluminum alloy 10-spoke 17-inch front wheel, while the Scrambler uses a 19-inch wheel. The front suspension features 43mm upside-down forks with 140mm of travel on the Speed model and 150mm on the Scrambler. The rear suspension is a mono-shock with external reservoir and adjustable preload, offering 130mm of travel on the Speed and 150mm on the Scrambler.

The bikes are equipped with single disc brakes. The front brake disc of the Scrambler is 320mm, 20mm larger than the Speed’s. The rear brake disc measures 230mm. The weight of the Scrambler is 179kg, 9kg heavier than the Speed version at 170kg. The seat heights are also different, with the Speed at 790mm and the Scrambler slightly higher at 835mm.
