On September 19, 2023, Toyota officially introduced its new B-segment SUV, the Yaris Cross, in the Vietnamese market. This model comes in two versions, petrol and hybrid, with prices ranging from 730 to 850 million VND. The petrol version is priced at 730 to 742 million VND, depending on the color. In other words, this B-segment SUV is priced almost equivalent to the standard Mazda CX-5 2.0L Deluxe (749 million VND) in the same price range.

So, with a budget of around 750 million VND, should you buy the Mazda CX-5 or the Toyota Yaris Cross standard version? Let’s compare these two models in the following article.

The first thing to note about the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Yaris Cross is the difference in size. The difference is quite obvious as the Mazda CX-5 is a C-segment SUV, while the Toyota Yaris Cross belongs to the B-segment SUV segment.

Compared to the Mazda CX-5, the Toyota Yaris Cross is shorter by 280 mm, narrower by 75 mm, lower by 65 mm, and has a 80 mm shorter wheelbase. However, the Toyota Yaris Cross has a higher ground clearance than the Mazda CX-5 and a smaller minimum turning radius. With a smaller turning radius, the Toyota Yaris Cross will be more maneuverable in urban areas.

In terms of exterior features, both the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Yaris Cross standard versions are equipped with LED headlights with auto on/off and adaptive lighting. They also have LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, LED taillights, power-folding side mirrors with turn signals, shark fin antenna, roof rails, and power tailgate/trunk lid.

However, the Toyota Yaris Cross is equipped with a trunk sensor, which the Mazda CX-5 does not have. In addition, the Mazda CX-5 uses 19-inch wheels, while the Toyota Yaris Cross uses 18-inch wheels.

When it comes to interior features, both the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Yaris Cross standard versions have a 5-seater interior. Their shared features include leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated function buttons, leather seats, smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control, rear air vents, electronic parking brake, temporary auto hold, 6-speaker audio system, smart key with push-button start.

The Toyota Yaris Cross also has a digital instrument cluster with a 7-inch TFT screen, a 10.1-inch center touchscreen, voice control, 2 USB Type C ports for rear seats, wireless phone charging, customizable interior ambient lighting, and paddle shifters.

On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 standard version only has an analog instrument cluster with a multi-information display and an 8-inch infotainment screen. It lacks wireless phone charging, voice control, customizable interior ambient lighting, and paddle shifters compared to the Toyota Yaris Cross.

However, the Mazda CX-5 standard version is equipped with 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, which the Toyota Yaris Cross does not have.

When it comes to cargo space, the Mazda CX-5, despite being larger, only has 442 liters of luggage space with all seats in place. The Toyota Yaris Cross, on the other hand, has 471 liters of luggage space.

In terms of safety features, both the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Yaris Cross standard versions have 6 airbags, disc brakes front/rear, electronic stability control, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system, 360-degree camera, front/rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic high beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.

However, the Mazda CX-5 standard version completely lacks advanced safety features such as ADAS. It only has basic safety features such as 6 airbags, electronic stability control, hill start assist, traction control, rearview camera, and parking sensors.

In terms of engine performance, the Toyota Yaris Cross standard version is powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 105 hp and maximum torque of 138 Nm, combined with a D-CVT transmission. It has front-wheel drive and consumes 7.41 liters/100 km in urban areas, 5.1 liters/100 km in non-urban areas, and 5.95 liters/100 km combined.

On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 standard version is equipped with a 2.0L SkyActiv-G petrol engine, producing a maximum output of 154 hp and maximum torque of 200 Nm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. It consumes 9.2 liters/100 km in urban areas, 5.95 liters/100 km in non-urban areas, and 7.13 liters/100 km combined.

In conclusion, the Toyota Yaris Cross will be suitable for small families who prefer the Toyota brand and want to have more convenience, safety features, and fuel-efficient engines. On the other hand, those who want a more spacious interior and more powerful engine can choose the Mazda CX-5. Buyers should consider their actual needs to make the best choice.
