BMW i5 electric and 5-Series with internal combustion engine in the new generation were launched at the same time, because aside from the drivetrain and cooling system, they are essentially the same car. Both were developed on BMW’s CLAR platform, instead of the next-generation Neue Klasse architecture that will not be ready until 2025.
But that doesn’t mean the 2024 5 Series lacks new technology. Along with a host of technology upgrades, the prices have also been adjusted upwards. Specifically, the base 530i 2024 has a starting price of $57,900, an increase of $1,900 compared to its predecessor. Meanwhile, the i5 eDrive40 starts at $66,800, while the i5 M60 xDrive starts at $84,100.
In this upgrade, the new generation BMW 5 Series has increased in size compared to its predecessor with a total length of 5,060mm (+97mm), width of 1,900mm (+32mm), height of 1,515mm (+36mm), and a wheelbase of 2,995mm (+20mm).
At launch, the BMW i5 electric will be available in two versions: the i5 eDrive40 RWD and the i5 M60 xDrive AWD. The eDrive40 is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor with a maximum output of 340 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque when Sport Boost or Launch Control is activated. With this power, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds and has a top speed of 193 km/h.
The more powerful i5 M60 xDrive has a dual electric motor setup that produces 601 horsepower and 820 Nm of torque when Sport Boost or M Launch Control is activated. With this power, the M60 xDrive can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 230 km/h.
Both the eDrive40 and M60 xDrive are equipped with an 81.2 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated WLTP range of 497 to 582 km for the eDrive40 and 455 to 516 km for the M60 xDrive.
For the internal combustion engine, the 2024 5 Series is offered with two four-cylinder mild-hybrid engines – one petrol and one diesel – in three variants at launch for the European market, including the 520i sedan with 208 horsepower and the 520d with 197 horsepower in both RWD and xDrive AWD variants.
Other internal combustion engine variants available in the US market include the 530i and 530i xDrive, which use a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, while the 540i xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0L 6-cylinder engine with 375 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque, which can be increased to 540 Nm with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
Some things remain unchanged on the new 5th generation as the German brand continues to advertise the 50:50 weight distribution, which is almost perfectly balanced between the front and rear axles. The M sports suspension system, M sports brake system, and Adaptive Suspension Professional are standard on the M60 xDrive.
Available options include electronically controlled dampers, integrated active steering and new vertical dynamics management, as well as Professional Adaptive M Suspension.
BMW also claims that the new i5 and 5th generation 5 Series are the first vehicles in the world to feature Active Lane Change Assist with eye confirmation. Accordingly, the vehicle can suggest lane changes, which the driver can confirm by looking at the exterior mirror to confirm the lane change. When traffic conditions allow, the Active Lane Change Assist system can automatically perform lane change steering maneuvers.
In addition, the latest 5 Series is equipped with parking assist with reverse assist. When the Professional Parking Assist mode is activated, automatic parking maneuvers up to 200 meters can be controlled from inside the car or via a smartphone from outside the car.
The 2024 BMW i5 and 5 Series come with a large dual-curved screen and the intelligent virtual assistant BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, along with a range of other premium features. In particular, in this upgrade, the new 5 Series brings users more interesting new experiences with integrated in-car gaming features when the car is parked, such as when the car is parked for recharging the battery.
The new generation 2024 BMW 5 Series will start hitting the market in October. Hopefully, the car will soon be available in the Vietnamese market.
