The plan is for Toyota to officially unveil the all-new 2025 Land Cruiser on August 1, marking the return of the iconic model to the North American market after a brief hiatus. This SUV will be a different model from the J300 introduced to the international market in 2021 and is expected to be named the J250, essentially replacing the Prado (J150) globally.
A series of official teaser images have revealed the close relationship between the 2024 Lexus GX and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. In history, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Lexus GX have maintained a close relationship, not only in terms of shared platforms but also in terms of exterior and interior design. However, the presence of both new SUV models in the US market has prompted Toyota to invest in bringing about greater differentiation in terms of styling.
In this article, we can preview the design of the upcoming Land Cruiser based on the design of the Lexus GX and previous teaser images. The 2025 Land Cruiser’s design is a combination of classic and modern elements, resulting in a very impressive new look.
At the front, rectangular headlights are positioned above the air intakes, reminiscent of the style of the J60. The black plastic grille is expanded, touching the black front bumper. The plastic panel on both sides of the front bumper stands out more than the Lexus, integrating additional air intakes. Finally, the hood has some differences with gradually fading lines towards the box-shaped front end of the car.
The sides of the car seem to share the same design as sibling SUV models, except for different designed wheels and minor changes in decorative accents.
However, the rear of the car tells a different story as Toyota has a unique vertically stacked taillight arrangement instead of the Lexus’ wide-ranging taillight cluster spread horizontally. The rear of the car features prominent “Land Cruiser” lettering.
Toyota has not yet revealed the interior design, but based on the design of the Lexus, the new Land Cruiser is expected to receive a significant upgrade compared to the previous model. Toyota designers may incorporate the latest existing technologies, including a modern digital cockpit with a large infotainment screen, while improving material quality. The SUV is also expected to provide a spacious cabin with a 3-row, 7-seat configuration and a large trunk.
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is expected to share the TNGA-F platform with the Lexus GX and many other SUV and pickup truck models from the Japanese automaker. If it has the same length of 5,005 mm as the GX, it will be slightly larger than the current 4,985 mm Land Cruiser J300 distributed in other markets. However, the different front and rear bumper designs could change the length of the new Land Cruiser.
In terms of powertrain, it is highly likely that the 2025 Land Cruiser will be equipped with a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 engine, producing a maximum output of 349 horsepower, similar to the Lexus GX, and there may be an option for the i-Force Max hybrid engine with a combined output of 437 horsepower, as found in the Toyota Sequoia electrified model. Regardless of the choice of engine, the 2025 Land Cruiser is likely to come with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD.
