The International Motorcycle Racing Federation (FIM), the Association of MotoGP Racing Teams and the organizers of the MotoGP 2020 announced that they are very sorry to have to cancel the MotoGP category of the 2020 season. The reason for this decision is that Qatar has implemented travel restrictions on groups of spectators coming from Italy.

According to Qatar’s announcement, from today, all passengers arriving in Doha on direct flights from Italy or who have been in Italy in the past 2 weeks will be quarantined for at least 14 days. Because Italy plays an important role in MotoGP races with a significant presence both on and off the track, the decision to cancel the opening race of the MotoGP 2020 in Qatar has been made. According to the original schedule, the Grand Prix of Qatar would have been held this weekend, from 6th to 8th March.

For the other two categories, Moto2 and Moto3, as the riders and teams have already been at Losail International Circuit for testing earlier this week, it is likely that they will continue as planned. In addition, there is no announcement of the cancellation of the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup race.

Italy continues to be the third-largest COVID-19 outbreak in the world. According to the report by the Italian Civil Protection Department (CPD), on March 1st, the country recorded an additional 5 deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the total number of fatalities to 34. Meanwhile, there has been a sharp increase in new cases with nearly 1,700 reported.
