Pre-Collision Assist will detect pedestrians using radar and camera technology to scan the roads, and if there is a risk of collision with a vehicle or pedestrian, it will emit a warning to the driver. In the event that the driver does not react in time, the system can automatically apply the brakes to help reduce the severity or even eliminate some collisions.
Ford upgrades collision avoidance technology with pedestrians.
Pre-Collision Assist can help avoid rear-end collisions with other vehicles at any speed, while the pedestrian detection feature can help drivers avoid pedestrians at lower speeds – both can reduce the severity of forward collisions or even prevent certain forward collisions.
While the new system can be particularly helpful in unexpected situations, it does not completely replace drivers and has limitations in nighttime, low light conditions, and harsh weather, vehicles moving in different directions, and certain weather conditions.
Ford will apply Pre-Collision Assist to the 2015 Mondeo model in Europe, where pedestrian protection laws are relatively strict. However, the company is committed to applying this technology to all its products globally in the future.
