The Yamaha Zuma 125, originally a gasoline-powered scooter with a unique design, was previously distributed by Yamaha in Taiwan and some markets in Europe. The Zuma 125 that appeared at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show has been completely redesigned by the Japanese brand to run on hydrogen.
What’s unique about this scooter is that it’s equipped with a hydrogen tank, similar to a 12kg gas tank placed on the rear seat. Yamaha stated that this is just a research version and the design of the scooter will be reconsidered.
This means that the shape and placement of the hydrogen tank may change. Yamaha has not provided detailed information about the hydrogen system installed on the scooter. The Japanese brand has also replaced the Zuma 125 logo with the HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology) logo.
HySE is known as a research association of motorcycle manufacturers including Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha to develop small-scale hydrogen-powered engines. Yamaha is responsible for researching the requirements for hydrogen fuel systems and hydrogen tanks for small-sized motorcycles.
