After nearly a decade, Toyota’s smallest hatchback for the ASEAN region has finally been upgraded with notable enhancements. The car was officially launched in Indonesia. With a new platform and a range of added features, Toyota Indonesia says the second-generation Wigo is a redesigned city car aimed at attracting customers.
Although official dimensions for the all-new Wigo have not yet been released, it is clear that this hatchback looks larger compared to its predecessor. The car is built on a new global platform called the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), which is also used on the Avanza/Veloz, Raize, and soon, the Vios.
In terms of appearance, the front of the car looks more aggressive with slim headlights reminiscent of the Raize crossover model, but the all-new Wigo stands out thanks to its larger grille. On the other hand, the rear features a larger window and redesigned taillights.
Inside the cabin, the new Wigo’s dashboard design looks familiar as it has been applied to the Raize, Avanza, and the new Vios. The car is equipped with a digital air conditioning control system, while the start/stop button and digital gauge cluster are featured in the premium variants.
As for the powertrain, the most notable change is the transmission option for the 2023 Wigo. Instead of the conventional 4-speed automatic transmission, the all-new Wigo now comes with a D-CVT gearbox for improved fuel efficiency and acceleration. The engine’s power figures have not been announced yet, but based on the information from the launch event, the Wigo 2023’s engine generates more power and torque.
Another new addition to the all-new Wigo is the GR Sport variant, which features a distinct bumper design, unique wheels, and two-tone paint scheme. Similar to other GR Sport models, we can also expect the new Wigo to have special GR details in the interior.
The all-new Wigo has been given a 4/5-star safety rating in the latest tests conducted by ASEAN NCAP. Therefore, we can expect the new hatchback to be one of the safest cars in its segment.
