A recent Consumer Report study shows that electric cars are having more issues than traditional gasoline cars.
Specifically, Fortune cited Consumer Report’s 2023 report, which showed that electric cars have a higher failure rate of 80% compared to gasoline cars between 2021 and 2023.
In the winter, electric cars typically encounter issues related to batteries, charging systems, and starting.
Currently, electric car manufacturers are still researching and developing products to improve reliability over time. However, for now, users still have to accept the fact that electric cars have many issues. In addition, the lack of charging stations and high cost further dampen users’ enthusiasm for electric cars.
Furthermore, Consumer Report’s study also revealed that hybrid cars face similar issues to electric cars. However, hybrid cars are still more reliable than pure electric cars because they have been on the market for a longer time and are gradually addressing those issues.
Consumer Report obtained survey data from electric car owners between 2021 and 2023 and compared it with older models. Based on the severity of issues such as battery failure, engine failure, and others, the organization created a ranking.
According to Consumer Report’s report, the failure rate of electric cars was twice as high as gasoline cars between 2021 and 2022. This rate decreased to 21% in 2023 but still remained higher than gasoline cars.
Although Tesla is considered experienced in research and production, according to expert Fisher, the company is also concerned about car failures. Therefore, they focus on selling smaller and cheaper models like the Model Y or Model 3. In reality, these models are simpler and have fewer issues compared to luxury models like the Model S or X.
In the reliability ranking of car brands, Toyota and Lexus are at the top, followed by Mini, Acura, and Honda. Meanwhile, Tesla ranks 14th out of 30 ranked car brands. Brands like Jeep, Volkswagen, Rivian, Mercedes Benz, and Chrysler are at the bottom of the reliability ranking.
