While the Kia EV5 will initially be sold in China, Kia has confirmed that this new electric model will be available worldwide.
The Kia EV5 is developed on the E-GMP platform, which is a dedicated electric vehicle platform used for several new generation Kia and Hyundai models. In China, the EV5 uses a 64.2 kWh battery pack that powers a 160 kW electric motor. The car has a maximum range of 530 km.
However, the long-range version of the EV5 will be equipped with an 88 kWh battery pack combined with a 160 kW electric motor, allowing the car to travel up to 720 km.
In terms of exterior design, the commercial version’s styling is similar to the concept version that was unveiled a few months ago. Upon closer inspection, we can see futuristic wheels that are slightly smaller than the 21-inch wheels on the concept version, larger wing mirrors, and minor tweaks to the front bumper.
Overall, the EV5 looks like a smaller version of the EV9, with a more aggressive “tiger face” design. With a length of 4,615 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the EV5 has similar dimensions to the Kia Sportage running on internal combustion engines and is 135 mm shorter than the Tesla Model Y.
The exterior color options for the EV5 include a total of 9 glossy colors and one matte color. Specifically, the glossy colors are Snow White Pearl; Clear White; Starry Night Black; Magma Red; Ivory Silver; Frost Blue; Iceberg Green; Tide Blue; and Shale Grey, while the matte color is Ivory Silver.
The target customers for the Kia EV5 are young families, meaning practicality is as important as modern design, convenience, and sustainability. Therefore, the interior of the SUV is envisioned as an “additional living room” for millennial families.
The front passenger seats are equipped with a more comfortable design. The 64-color interior ambient lighting system with adjustable brightness is synchronized with driving modes and ADAS system alerts.
The cabin space is also inspired by the EV9, featuring a wide and minimalist dashboard like the EV9, as well as a panoramic display combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The 4-spoke steering wheel integrates most of the controls, while Kia opts for physical buttons for the air conditioning. We can also see dual USB-C ports, wireless charging, and multiple storage compartments. The rear seats can be folded flat for convenient cargo transportation.
In terms of safety equipment, users can rest assured about the safety of the EV5 as this model comes with comprehensive features, including ADAS. The safety features include 7 airbags, L2+ level driving assistance, remote parking assist, and automatic lane change.
