The latest sedan model from Mercedes-AMG will be built on a pure electric, high-performance platform called AMG.EA and is promised to have a power output of over 1,000 horsepower.

Mercedes-AMG is developing and enhancing its first-ever standalone electric sports car, expected to be launched in 2025. The new electric model will replace the GT 63 4-door Coupe and compete with the likes of Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT. It is expected to have a more powerful output than the current GT 63 SE Performance hybrid, reaching 831 horsepower.

This new model will be developed from scratch by Mercedes-AMG and will use a new high-performance electric architecture called AMG.EA. This platform comes with an improved new drive motor from Yasa – an electric motor and controller manufacturer based in the UK. The new drive motor is lighter, smaller, more efficient, and has significantly better performance characteristics compared to the current type used by Mercedes.

Currently, Mercedes-AMG has not revealed the technical specifications of the new sedan, but Yasa has disclosed to Autocar that the car will be equipped with one of the company’s 24 kg heavy-duty electric motors, generating an output of 480 horsepower and a peak torque of 800 Nm. When using two motors for two axles, the total system power will approach the threshold of 1,000 horsepower, while the torque will fluctuate around 1,500 Nm. In addition, the car also has the option of 3 motors similar to the Model S Plaid, Air Sapphire with a power output of over 1,400 horsepower.

Vision AMG Concept

Last year, the German automaker gave the world a glimpse of the new electric sedan through the debut of the Vision AMG Concept. According to Autocar, this concept car acts as a close-to-production preview in terms of design and overall dimensions.

The Vision AMG Concept has a length of 5,100 mm, slightly longer than the current GT 4-door Coupe and 147 mm longer than the Porsche Taycan.

An important factor of the new sedan will be the battery pack. In order to ensure the lowest possible center of gravity, Mercedes-AMG will use a thin underfloor battery pack using silicon anode material produced by US company Sila.

Robert Lesnik – Head of Exterior Design at Mercedes-Benz, told Autocar that the electric car replacing the GT 4-Door Coupe will not be the only model built on the AMG.EA platform.

“The AMG.EA platform offers a lot of intelligent design possibilities. We can achieve much lower prices than the EVA platform,” said Robert Lesnik. “We are not developing a new platform just for one model. The Vision AMG is a starting point. It can be certain that there will be other electric models dedicated to AMG in the future.”
