When people think of Hummer vehicles, they often imagine big, strong, and rugged SUVs. However, throughout the history of the Hummer brand, all you will find are SUVs. Hummer did not produce any smaller vehicles.

The Hummer brand actually reminds us of another military brand, that is Jeep. Formed by the Willys-Overland company in the 1940s, the Jeep brand became so popular that when Henry J. Kaiser bought the Willys-Overland company in 1953, its name was changed to Kaiser-Jeep and still featured the Jeep name alongside it.

Humvee designed as the main military vehicle in the army

In 1970, the American automaker purchased Kaiser-Jeep and renamed it the Jeep Corporation. At that time, Jeep was producing various types of vehicles through two branches: the Commercial Products division in Toledo, Ohio, and the Government Products division in South Bend, Indiana.

A year later, the Government Products division became an independent company known as AM General. In the early 1980s, this company, now owned by LTV Corporation, designed a type of vehicle under contract with the U.S. Military. It was called the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), or Humvee. The Humvee was designed as the main military vehicle in the army. AM General signed a production contract in 1983 (the first contract of many with the U.S. Military) with a requirement to supply 55,000 vehicles within 5 years.

The AM General Humvees truly stood out during the Gulf War in the early 1990s. The utility of these vehicles in wartime made them popular and no longer limited to military use. Finally, in 1992, AM General (now owned by Renco Group) decided to produce a civilian version of the Humvee, called the Hummer. In 1999, General Motors bought the Hummer brand and took responsibility for the future development, advertising, and distribution of Hummer SUVs.

The original Hummer, now known as the H1, is still popular and only a small number of these vehicles are produced each year. The uniqueness of this vehicle plays a significant role in creating an expensive luxury SUV, which is a hallmark of the brand. Under GM’s leadership, the brand expanded to include other models and still owns the Hummer bravado, but these vehicles are more suitable for everyday use given the better road conditions that now exist.

Hummer H1

After one year of being on sale, the famous Hummer brand of GM was eventually sold to a Chinese company. However, although General Motors (GM) agreed to sell the Hummer brand to the Chinese heavy machinery company Sichuan Tengzhong, the deal did not materialize and Hummer was eventually discontinued.
