A group of armed robbers threatened the car owner to steal the expensive Porsche, but then had to leave because they didn’t know how to drive a manual car.

At around 11:55 pm on November 26, the Maryland state police received a report of a carjacking on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda. Specifically, that evening, Myo Maung, the owner of a Porsche 718 Boxster, got out of the car to open the hood when suddenly attacked by a group of 3 robbers. One of them used a gun to threaten the owner for the key while the other two stood guard.

After taking the key from the owner, this person jumped into the car but realized he couldn’t drive it because the Porsche had a manual transmission. Over half a minute after the car was started, the sound of the engine went off immediately. Another person in the group also tried to get in and start the car but had to give up and all three had to abandon the expensive Porsche and run away.

While the three robbers were struggling, Mr. Maung ran into a nearby restaurant to hide and call the police. When he returned to the scene, the car owner was very surprised to see that the robbers had left and left the vehicle behind. Only when reviewing the footage from the dashcam did the owner and the police realize the “safety” of the manual transmission.

In fact, it is not uncommon for car thefts to fail simply because the thieves do not know how to operate a manual transmission. Also in the US, in 2016, a young man attempted to steal a car but his efforts went up in smoke because he didn’t know how to drive a manual car. In 2018, a group of robbers took control of a woman in Nashville, jumped into the car but fled a few seconds later because they didn’t know how to start the car.
