According to Autostat, a market analysis firm, the Moskvich automaker made its first appearance in the top 10 best-selling brands in November 2023 in Russia.

The sales of passenger cars in Russia reached 109,706 units, a 113% increase compared to the same period last year. The statistics show that the country’s automobile market is recovering after a sharp decline in 2022 when Western car manufacturers left one after another.

Moskvich is a well-known car brand from the former Soviet Union. The company started producing cars in 1946 and went bankrupt in 2001, then sold its production line to Renault. When Renault announced its withdrawal from the market in 2022 due to tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian government bought back the factory for the symbolic price of 1 Rouble and revived the Moskvich brand.

In November, Moskvich made its first appearance in the list of the best-selling cars in Russia, ranking 9th with a total of 1,910 units sold, accounting for 1.7% market share. So far this year, Moskvich has sold a total of 10,676 cars.

Meanwhile, Lada topped the list in November with 32,651 cars sold, capturing a market share of 29.8%. The remaining positions belonged to Chinese car brands.

The departure of European and Japanese car brands from the Russian market due to political factors has created favorable conditions for the strong development of Chinese cars in the country. Autostat’s data shows that Chinese car brands accounted for 56% of the total market share. The statistics also show that the Russian market consumed 939,254 passenger cars of all types from January to November 2023, an increase of nearly 65% compared to the same period last year.
