After nearly 4 years off the grid, the new generation Mitsubishi Pajero is likely to return in 2024.
In March 2023, Mitsubishi revealed plans to produce 16 new vehicles over the next 5 years. Among them will be at least 2 SUV models, including a monocoque body-on-frame SUV (optimized for comfort and on-road driving) and a frame-sharing vehicle with Triton.
According to the press, there is a high possibility that these will be the new Pajero and Pajero Sport. This likelihood is quite high as recently, Shaun Westcott – CEO of Mitsubishi Australia unexpectedly shared that the name Pajero is “very, very valuable” to the company, “anything with the name Pajero needs to be truly special and it is a truly fantastic car”.
Koichi Namiki – Mitsubishi Motors’ EVP of Global Product Strategy also made a statement at a conference: “Pajero is the heart of our brand.” Therefore, Mitsubishi Pajero will not share platforms with other brands. However, the Japanese car manufacturer still leaves open the possibility of Pajero sharing “systems and components” from alliances.
Meanwhile, the second rumored model – the Pajero Sport – is said to be able to confirm the same frame (shared with Triton).
Mitsubishi Pajero ceased production in 2021 after nearly 4 decades on the market. The total number of vehicles sold, up until the time of discontinuation, was over 3.3 million.
According to the plan, Mitsubishi Pajero will be launched around the end of 2024. Meanwhile, the new Pajero Sport will debut slightly later in 2025.
