The Toyota EPU Concept is about the same size as the Ford Maverick and is developed based on a unibody frame system.
At the Japan Auto Exhibition 2023, which takes place from October 25 to November 5, Toyota showcased the EPU Concept prototype. The Japanese brand says this is a preview of a completely new all-electric pickup truck.
According to the announcement, the EPU Concept has a unibody structure, with dimensions of length x width x height of 5,070 x 1,910 x 1,710 (mm). These dimensions are similar to small-sized diesel-powered pickup trucks like the Ford Maverick or the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Meanwhile, the vehicle has a wheelbase length of up to 3,350mm, 345mm longer than the Santa Cruz and 265mm longer than the double cab configuration of the Hilux.
Different from many recent concept car models that Toyota has introduced, the EPU Concept has a simple and practical design. Therefore, many experts believe that the commercial version of the EPU will not differ much in appearance from the concept version. The highlight at the front of the car is the long LED strip, combined with the word TOYOTA in the middle instead of the brand logo. As an electric vehicle, the EPU Concept does not have a radiator grille.
Both sides of the vehicle have a rounded design due to the relatively few prominent creases. The car is equipped with two-tone spoke rims, combined with off-road tires. At the rear, the car is equipped with horizontal LED taillights. According to Toyota, the unibody frame platform of the Toyota EPU Concept helps connect the interior and the cargo bed into a solid block. Especially, the cargo door can fold square, expanding storage space in necessary cases.
The Toyota EPU Concept features a 2-row passenger compartment with a futuristic design. In front of the driver is a square-shaped steering wheel inspired by racing cars. The car is also equipped with two large screens including the instrument cluster and the central entertainment screen. The button-like shifter and the electronic parking brake seem to be integrated into the center screen.
The commercial version of Toyota EPU’s engine configuration is still unknown. According to the predictions of some foreign websites, the car will have at least one configuration with two electric motors, along with a four-wheel drive system.
