A Russian SUV model with a 3-door body style was introduced in 1977.

In the era of electrification, we have recently had to say goodbye to automotive icons like the Audi TT and Audi R8, Dodge Challenger and Charger, Ferrari F8 Tributo and Portofino, and the legendary Ford Fiesta. Even impressive models like the McLaren 720S and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé will be discontinued by the end of 2024.

Pure off-road models are also gradually disappearing, but there are still some “old-timers” that continue to be upgraded, with the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series being a recent example and now the Lada Niva.

Accordingly, the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ has updated the Lada Niva SUV, which has been present in some markets for nearly half a century. The Lada Niva is still a 3.7m long SUV with a 3-door body style, and its design has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 1977.

After facing sanctions against Russia, the Lada Niva continued production in 2022 but without airbags, ABS, and some other basic features that cars have had for decades. Coming back next year, the major updates that AvtoVAZ is bringing to the Lada Niva 2024 are an anti-lock braking system on both the Legend and Travel versions.

In addition, the Lada Niva 2024 also receives an updated engine that meets Euro 5 regulations. This standard has been in place since 2009, so it is very outdated. Note that Euro 6 has been implemented since 2014, and Euro 7 will be introduced around 2025. Previously, when it returned to production in 2022, the Lada Niva was only equipped with an engine that met Euro 2 standards, introduced since 1996.

On the premium Travel version, the car will receive amenities such as a cruise control system (with speed limiter), an LCD display, and two-tone alloy wheels. According to Russia’s Auto Pro News magazine, the electronic stability control system will return by the end of December. Basic safety features such as airbags are still absent from this off-road SUV model. Both versions are currently in production.

With the new upgrades, the price of the Lada Niva 2024 will increase significantly. Previously, the starting price of the Lada Niva Legend was 9,140 USD (~221 million VND). But now, the cheapest price is 10,200 USD (~247 million VND). The old Travel version, which used to cost 13,200 USD (~320 million VND), is now priced at 13,400 USD (~325 million VND).
