In a recent announcement, Volvo said it will launch its first MPV model, called the EM90, on November 12. Although the EM90 is Volvo’s first product to enter the MPV segment, the company has high expectations for this model, especially in terms of safety.
Volvo has announced that the EM90 is developed based on a frame made of high-strength steels, including boron steel, to increase rigidity and reduce impact from traffic collisions. This MPV model has a unique dual A-column structure, improving visibility and providing safety for passengers. The vehicle’s battery pack is also protected by a special steel alloy. Volvo wants to ensure the safety of both occupants and the valuable battery pack as the foundation of the MPV.
In addition, the Volvo EM90 comes with numerous features to support the ADAS system, including high-resolution cameras, surround-view cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and ultrasonic sensors.
Alongside safety, customer well-being is a priority for Volvo. This is evident in the advanced air filtration system installed in the EM90, which can remove up to 95% of fine PM 2.5 dust particles.
The EM90 boasts a 21-speaker audio system by Bowers & Wilkins with a power output of 2,460W, including integrated headrest speakers, promising an exceptional experience for customers.
“The EM90 is designed to provide comfort and peace of mind in Scandinavian style,” said Erik Severinson, Product Development Director at Volvo, in a press release. “It sets a new standard for modern luxury—a term often replaced nowadays by the concept of ‘quality of life.’ At Volvo, we have a unique position to embrace this new mindset. After all, we come from Sweden, a place where people believe that quality of life is as important as life itself.”
Volvo EM90 will begin accepting reservations on November 12 in the Chinese market. For now, the company does not have plans to sell this MPV model in the US and Europe. However, according to Automotive News, the Swedish brand is considering the possibility of introducing the EM90 to markets outside of China.
