Jose Mujica has long been known as the “poorest president in the world” due to his simple and honest lifestyle. One of the iconic symbols of the unique lifestyle of the President of Uruguay is his light blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.
Recently, in an interview with Busqueda newspaper, President Mujica revealed that an Arab Prince offered to pay $1 million to buy his Volkswagen Beetle. This unexpected offer was made during the G77+China Summit held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in June 2014.

President Mujica did not disclose the name of the Arab Prince. The Prince visited President Mujica and made the offer to buy his famous vintage Volkswagen Beetle for $1 million. “That’s what they told me. However, I’m not very interested in the offer,” Mujica revealed to Busqueda newspaper.
Of course, the Arab Prince is not the first person to offer to buy President Mujica’s vintage car. In a private conversation, the former Mexican ambassador also expressed interest in buying the 1987 Volkswagen Beetle from Mujica, which would have been auctioned off in the land of wide-brimmed hats. The money raised would have been enough for Mujica to buy 10 brand new four-wheel drive cars.
President Mujica doesn’t want to sell the Volkswagen Beetle because he still needs it to transport his three-legged dog, Manuela.
As we all know, the 1987 Volkswagen Beetle of the “poorest president in the world” is produced in Brazil. He has been driving the car for many years, but “Buga Beetle” is still in fairly good condition. The President of Uruguay takes great care of his car.
