This rusty Mercedes-Benz 190SL has been locked away in a garage in the West Midlands of England for 30 years. After being discovered and brought out of the garage, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL was put up for auction.
The Mercedes-Benz 190SL has remained untouched since the late 80s. The owner of the Mercedes-Benz 190SL had no intention of restoring this “pile of rusty metal.” In fact, the owner had no idea of the value of the rusted Mercedes-Benz 190SL.
When found, apart from the rusted exterior, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL also had a damaged interior. It is known that the Mercedes-Benz 190SL has only traveled 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometers). It is estimated that this car would require a considerable amount of money to be restored to its original condition.
Despite being in poor condition, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL still attracted the attention of many car collectors. A millionaire agreed to pay £60,000 (1.76 billion Vietnamese Dong) for it. In other words, this Mercedes-Benz 190SL is valued the same as a new E-Class with a V6 engine, luxurious leather seats, a self-parking system, and keyless entry.
After being restored, this Mercedes-Benz 190SL could be worth up to £150,000 (4.4 billion Vietnamese Dong). Previously, the highest price for a Mercedes-Benz 190SL at an auction was £164,000 (4.84 billion Vietnamese Dong).
Mark Bryan from H&H Classics auction company, who discovered this car, stated: “It truly is an amazing car. I never thought I would find an original Mercedes-Benz 190SL like this“.
“At first glance, I didn’t recognize what car it was because the grille was missing. I only saw a pile of rusted metal. But when I found out it was a Mercedes-Benz 190SL, I was truly excited“, Bryan revealed. “When I took the car outside and cleaned it, I realized the potential of a promising restoration project“.
The Mercedes-Benz 190 was introduced in 1955 as a more affordable option to its sibling, the 300 SL. Despite being cheaper, the Mercedes-Benz 190 still had an elegant and stylish design similar to the 300 SL.
The Mercedes-Benz 190 was equipped with a maximum power output of 120 horsepower. With this, the car could reach a top speed of 174 km/h.
Soviet Minister’s Car Shines Bright After Rebirth
Over time, especially since the country opened up in the 1990s, Soviet cars have gradually disappeared to be replaced by Japanese, American, and European cars. Many Volga, Lada, and UAZ cars were liquidated from state agencies and transferred to civilian registration, but they did not exist for long before a wave of both imported and assembled cars flooded the streets. Soviet cars slowly drifted away and became a nostalgic reminder of a generation that has gone through two wars.
