The owner of this vintage car collection is Mr. Khang, residing in Tan Phong Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province. Currently, he is the owner of Khang Pham auto garage, following in his father’s footsteps.

Three outstanding cars in Mr. Khang’s collection.

Speaking about his passion for collecting vintage cars, he said: “My father is a car mechanic and chauffeur since the 2000s. Observing him at work sparked my passion for vintage cars from a young age. Being chauffeured to school by my father in a Volkswagen T1, my childhood memories are closely linked to the unique curves in the design of this car model. In addition to the Mercedes Limousine, Cadilac Deville, and Citroen Traction, I also own other super-rare models like Ford Mustang, Dodge, GMC, Fiat 850, and many other unique car models.”

In order to collect these cars, Mr. Khang had to rely on various relationships, even when accidentally coming across cars that had been abandoned for many years, he was willing to buy them and restore them. He acquired the 1969 Mercedes Limousine from a car owner in Long An. Then, Mr. Khang continued to “hunt” for the Cadillac Deville from Lam Dong, and the Citoren Traction was bought from a middle-aged man in Saigon. When he first bought them, most of them were in dilapidated condition, especially the Mercedes that had been immobile for years.

The interior of the car still retains its original luxury.

To revive a car, the owner said that attention must be paid to each stage. For example, when repairing the body, it must be made to match the original shape of the manufacturer. Then remove the old paint, clean it, and paint it in the color of your choice. To maintain the gloss, he applies an additional layer of ceramic coating for protection. The car mechanic also installs an air conditioning system because classic cars usually do not have this component. Since vintage cars all have small-capacity engines, he has to choose suitable air conditioning units to prevent them from being overloaded. In addition, the owner also installs electric power steering to provide convenient driving experience when moving in the city. The time to refurbish a vintage car is usually 8 months to a year. However, some products have required a lot of effort and taken up to 3 years to complete.

Regarding safety, the owner uses some modern car parts to replace components such as the braking system, seat belts, and headlights for nighttime driving. Disc brakes and other audio devices have also been installed to meet entertainment needs.

The owner’s joy is when his car is running on the road, even when it encounters malfunctions. He believes that memories with cars are not just when he drives them but also when they challenge him, even pushing, repairing the car regardless of weather and location. The car mechanic sees it as a motivation to perfect durable products that operate smoothly during long-distance trips.

When asked about the most memorable situation while driving vintage cars, Mr. Khang said: “In the times I went to buy cars far away, because of the conquering spirit, I always liked to drive straight home even though I knew they had not been repaired. The time I went to buy the Cadillac, me and three friends decided to drive from Dalat to Bien Hoa, and around noon, we stopped to have lunch. At that time, many people saw the beautiful car and asked to take photos, which made me very happy. But after finishing lunch and trying to start the car, it didn’t start because the battery was drained after being left for a long time without charging, so I had to contact the rescue team.”

Attracting attention with the uniqueness of the collection always makes Mr. Khang proud.

After restoration, all of Mr. Khang’s cars always provide a smooth driving experience on any road. Belonging to the luxury segment, they have spacious interiors, making passengers comfortable when sitting in them. Experiencing driving classic models always brings excitement and relaxation to the car owner. For him, nothing is better than sitting in a vintage car, enjoying light music after a tiring workday. In addition to using them for daily transportation, Mr. Khang always drives them when taking his family on long trips.

Among the collection, the owner has the most affection for the Citroen Traction because it carries the characteristic image of old Saigon streets. The design of the car is also very gentle and sophisticated. Currently, the value of each car is kept secret, but Mr. Khang said he can share them with those who share the same passion and assure that they will take good care of the cars.

Soviet Minister’s Car Shines Bright After Rebirth

Over time, especially since the country opened up in the 1990s, Soviet cars have gradually disappeared to be replaced by Japanese, American, and European cars. Many Volga, Lada, and UAZ cars were liquidated from state agencies and transferred to civilian registration, but they did not exist for long before a wave of both imported and assembled cars flooded the streets. Soviet cars slowly drifted away and became a nostalgic reminder of a generation that has gone through two wars.
