In a small town in Spain called Molins de Rei, artist Pere Tarragó is well-known for his extraordinary skills in creating incredibly beautiful and accurate scale model cars with ratios of 1:5 and 1:6.
These model cars are completely different from other available model cars. Tarragó’s works are so beautiful and detailed that if you look at the pictures, it’s hard to distinguish his model cars from real ones.
Overall, Tarragó creates his model cars much like other craftsmen, using turning, milling, and welding. However, regular tools are unable to accomplish these tasks, so Tarragó creates his own tools.
Tarragó’s model making process starts with photographing, drawing, and making a design that is similar to the real car. The models Tarragó selects are often vintage Spanish cars like Bultaco, Montesa, and OSSA. Occasionally, he also makes models for Italian brands like MV Agusta and Moto Guzzi or American brands like Henderson and Indian.
Once satisfied with the design, Tarragó begins constructing the model using materials such as steel, aluminum, bronze, and Nappa leather.
About a week later, Tarragó starts assembling the components into a complete model, testing the functioning of the brakes, clutch, wheels, and gearbox. Everything works just like a real car.
In some of his pieces, pressing the foot brake activates the drum brake, and the front suspension functions through cone springs and leaf springs.
After completing the testing process and ensuring that all the components work well and fit together, Tarragó disassembles the entire model and enters the finishing stage: polishing, nickel plating, chrome plating, and painting the model’s components. It takes between 250 and 400 hours to create a finished model.
