High-end hotels in Vietnam prefer using old motorcycles, cyclos, or vintage Volkswagen Beetles to transport foreign tourists around the country. This unique and friendly mode of transportation offers a more personal experience compared to traditional tourist buses.
Foreign visitors are particularly fascinated by the loud noise and distinctive sound of Vespa scooters as they zip through the streets of Saigon. This has led to the formation of a group of Vespa enthusiasts who offer rides to tourists or share their passion for vintage scooters.
In early March 2016, a group of nearly 30 Vespa and Lambretta scooters caught the attention of local residents in the central district of Ho Chi Minh City. These scooters were carrying foreign tourists and taking them to popular tourist destinations in the city.
The routes taken by these scooters include Dien Bien Phu, Le Duan, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, as well as famous landmarks such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, Saigon Central Post Office, and Ben Thanh Market, which always attract the attention of local residents when the group stops by.
For many people on the streets, the unexpected sight of a group of vintage scooters is fascinating. They are especially intrigued by the women members of the group, who confidently ride the scooters alongside their male counterparts.
“Ever since I was little, my dad used to take me for rides on his 1967 Vespa Sprint. The sound of its unique exhaust and the lingering white smoke always stayed in my mind. When I got my driver’s license, I pursued my passion for vintage scooters and the Vespa community. Sometimes while riding with the group, I often notice curious glances and teasing comments from male riders. It brings me joy to share my love for Saigon and showcase its beauty to foreign tourists,” said Tú Anh, one of the group members.
The group members have a wide variety of Vespa models including Acma, Standard, Supper, Sprint, as well as some “knock-off” Vespa scooters and Lambretta scooters. In the photo, there is a beautifully restored Lambretta Li 125 in striking blue and silver.
The Lambretta Li 125 is powered by a 125cc 4-stroke engine, providing a maximum output of 5.5 horsepower.
