Nowadays, cars are equipped with many modern features as well as an outstanding safety technology package. This leads to the increasing production costs, prices, and repair costs of automobiles.
Recently, AAA – a non-profit organization based in Washington DC has conducted a study and revealed a hypothesis that in the event of an accident, users would have to spend a significant amount of money to repair the problematic components.
Depending on the type of vehicle, there will be different maintenance costs. However, AAA’s research shows that about 37.6% of the costs are related to repairing and adjusting sensors and cameras used for advanced safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, rear parking sensors, emergency automatic braking, etc.
The director of AAA’s automotive engineering department, Greg Brannon, said: “Vehicles equipped with complex safety systems are becoming more popular, especially since the NHTSA (USA) proposed mandatory automatic emergency braking regulations earlier this year. However, users need to be concerned and find out the repair costs in case these technologies fail.”
To evaluate more precisely, AAA conducted an analysis on three vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems. AAA stated that on average, repairing radar sensors would cost users an additional $500 – $1,300. (around 12 – 31 million VND).
If repairing ultrasonic sensors used for parking assistance, the price would range from $300 – $1,000 (around 7.2 – 24 million VND).
In the case of a malfunctioning windshield camera system, the repair would cost about $900 – $1,200 (equivalent to 22 – 24 million VND).
When repairing the sensor and camera system on the rearview mirror, users may have to pay an amount ranging from $740 – $1,600 (equivalent to 18 to 38 million VND). This amount even accounts for 70.8% of the cost to replace a mirror.
Although repairing these safety devices may be difficult and expensive, the benefits they bring during vehicle operation cannot be denied.
