Recently, the Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) participated in the IDEMITSU SUPER ENDURANCE SOUTHEAST ASIA TROPHY 2023 (10-hour high-speed race) at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand.
Toyota joined forces with ROOKIE Racing team, competing with three models: the concept model ORC ROOKIE GR86 CNF, a GR68 powered by carbon neutral fuel, the concept model ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2, a Corolla powered by hydrogen, and the CP ROOKIE PRIUS CNF-HEV GR model, a Prius HEV powered by carbon neutral fuel. All three cars completed the race.
Toyota utilized locally-produced hydrogen sourced from Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, a Toyota partner with a mutual goal of achieving a carbon neutral society in Thailand, for the 10-hour endurance race in Thailand. Appreciation events were also organized prior to the race for Thai fans who support Toyota daily, marking a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality and the “Joy of Driving” through motorsport.
GR 2023 Festival
Before the 10-hour high-speed race on December 22-23 in Thailand, Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT) organized the GR 2023 Festival on December 19 in Bangkok, Thailand, where there are many motorsport enthusiasts, attracting around 2,500 fans.
At the GR 2023 Festival, racing drivers from ROOKIE Racing team, Toyota Gazoo Thai Racing team, and D1 participated in team demonstrations, Time Attacks, and Drifts. TMT also showcased the IMV0 concept car and expressed gratitude to the Thai people.
Three cars completed the race: carbon neutral fuel, hydrogen engine, and Hybrid
The three cars participating in the 10-hour endurance race in Thailand were the GR86 powered by carbon neutral fuel, the hydrogen-powered Corolla, and the Prius. They all completed the race and finished as follows:
In this race, Toyota aimed to expand carbon neutral options for sports cars. The GR86 and Prius utilized carbon neutral fuel. The Corolla’s hydrogen engine used bio-based hydrogen made from chicken manure at CP’s poultry farms.
After the race, President Akio Toyoda, also known as the racing driver Morizo, shared that the participation in this race demonstrated that hydrogen and hybrid are carbon neutral options. Despite some difficulties during the race, Toyota’s racing team managed to complete the race. In addition to the hydrogen engine participating in the race for the second year, President Akio Toyoda is also pleased with the positive reception of the Prius and hybrid cars by the Thai people.
Toyota is also collaborating with CP to reduce CO2 emissions in Thailand by leveraging each company’s specific expertise. As energy producers, transporters, and users, and automobile manufacturers, President Toyota expects that with more cooperation and actions, the number of partners sharing the same direction will increase, and the future will certainly change.
