The year 2024 is already a few days old, and this is also the time when car manufacturers announce their sales figures for the past year. 2023 saw a recovery in the US car market after the Covid-19 pandemic, with experts predicting a cumulative sales volume of 15.5 million cars, a growth of about 13%.
The leading car manufacturer in the US market in 2023 in terms of sales volume is General Motors (GM). Specifically, in the past 12 months, this American car corporation sold 2,577,662 cars to domestic customers, an increase of 14.1% compared to 2022. This is also GM’s best business result since 2019 – the time before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out.
Chevrolet continues to be the best-selling brand of the GM corporation, selling 1,699,244 cars, an increase of 13.1%. Next is the GMC brand with 563,677 cars sold, an increase of 8.9%. However, the subsidiary brand with the highest growth rate of GM is Buick with 61.4% to 167,030 cars. In addition, in 2023, GM also sold 75,883 electric cars to Americans, accounting for 2.9% of total sales.
“We lead the market in the pickup truck segment and succeed with affordable SUV models such as the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista. These are among the best-selling models right now,” said Marissa West, Vice President of GM North America, told reporters for the Detroit Free Press. “In 2024, we expect sales to continue to grow strongly. We are excited about the opportunities ahead as we provide customers with new choices like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.”
In second place behind GM is Japan-based rival Toyota. In 2023, a total of 2,248,477 Toyota and Lexus cars were sold to Americans, a growth of 6.6%. Meanwhile, Ford Corporation ranked third in the overall market with 1,995,912 cars sold, an increase of 7.1%. This is also Ford’s highest growth rate since 2020. However, the success of the F-Series – the best-selling model in the US market for decades – still couldn’t help Ford surpass its two competitors GM and Toyota. In the whole of 2023, the Americans bought a total of 750,789 Ford F-Series cars.
The 4th place in the US market belongs to a name from Korea, Hyundai Group. Last year, the 3 brands Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis of this corporation were very successful with a cumulative sales volume of 1,652,821 cars, an increase of 12.1%. This result helped Hyundai surpass the Stellantis corporation, which includes familiar brands like Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo. In contrast to the 4 competitors, Stellantis had an unsuccessful year when sales fell 1.3% to 1,533,670 cars.
Meanwhile, Honda with 2 brands – Honda and Acura – ranks 6th in the overall market. In 2023, a total of 1,308,166 Honda and Acura cars found new owners in the US, equivalent to a growth rate of 33%. It can be seen that Honda’s growth rate is higher than the above competitors.
Other car manufacturers that saw strong growth in the US market last year include BMW with 397,521 cars sold (an increase of 9.3%), Mazda (363,354 cars, an increase of 23.2%), the Nissan/Mitsubishi alliance (986,136 cars, an increase of 21%), and Subaru (632,086 cars, an increase of 13.6%). The Volkswagen Group, with brands like Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini, sold 565,416 cars to Americans, a growth of 14.2%.
