Daihatsu announced last Friday that the company has resumed vehicle shipments in Indonesia, two days after the Japanese automaker temporarily halted all domestic and global shipments due to the identification of improper safety inspections on most of its models.

Indonesia is the first country to clear Daihatsu of safety scandal. The Toyota-owned small car manufacturer also sells its products in other foreign markets including Malaysia, Thailand, and Uruguay. Daihatsu said they will continue to negotiate with regulatory agencies in other Asian countries to resume exports.

In its home market, the auto manufacturer based in Osaka is expected to suspend production at all domestic plants on Tuesday. Japanese business daily Nikkei reported on Friday without quoting sources that the production halt is expected to continue until the end of January. After the Nikkei report, a spokesman for Daihatsu said the company is still holding internal discussions on the matter.

A third-party committee established by Daihatsu said the number of affected vehicles in the improperly conducted tests, which first emerged in the spring, had expanded to 64 models, including all 11 models the company sells in Japan, about 88,000 vehicles.

On December 20, 2023, in Japan, Daihatsu reported the investigation results along with the investigation process to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry after receiving the results of the independent investigation committee. After that, the independent committee and Daihatsu/Toyota held separate press conferences on this matter.

Immediately after the above-mentioned press conference in Japan, on the afternoon of December 20th, Toyota Vietnam proactively suspended the delivery of all batches of Daihatsu-related vehicles to dealerships to further verify specific information for the Vietnamese market. However, after researching the above-mentioned anomalies in detail, Toyota Vietnam announced that only one affected model, the Avanza Premio manual version (MT), is being stopped from delivery in Vietnam.

Currently, Toyota Vietnam has suspended the delivery of the Avanza Premio MT model to dealerships, as the certification of this model overseas is currently being examined by independent testing and certification agencies. Toyota Vietnam said they have immediately reported this case to the regulatory agencies to explain the situation and seek opinions on the matter.
