Mercedes-Benz has never introduced a convertible version of the high-performance SUV Mercedes-AMG G 63. The last time the German automaker made a convertible G-Class was in 2013 with the G500 Final Edition, which featured a naturally aspirated V8 engine with 388 horsepower. However, there is good news for fans of this famous off-road SUV as Refined Marques, a German tuning company, has recently decided to launch the Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet with unique reverse-opening rear doors.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet by Refined Marques in the article is one of 20 customization projects based on the new G63 platform, using a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 577 horsepower. While the overall design of the soft top resembles the previous two-door Final Edition, the tuning company has added two smaller doors for easier access to the rear seats.

Refined Marques CEO Ahmed Al Bakry stated that originally the rear doors were designed to open in the traditional way, like you see on a regular G-Class. “Then I said no, let’s make reverse-opening doors to help larger guests to have easier access,” Ahmed Al Bakry said.

Al Bakry recounted that a supermodel from the United States (who wished to remain anonymous) called him as soon as she found out about the G63 Cabriolet, complaining about the difficulty of getting in and out of her current G Cabrio’s rear seat to the point where she ripped her dress and broke her heels. She is one of the owners of this completely new Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet.

An interesting fact is that this convertible G63 was initially supposed to be produced as a one-off. Al Bakry said he got the idea to create the G63 Cabrio from his 5-year-old son, who asked him if the Brabus G700 he was driving could be made with a soft top and a small door for him to get in and out. This question piqued Al Bakry’s curiosity.

During the development process, Al Bakry told his friends and customers – most of whom are very wealthy collectors from the Middle East – about the customized car. Naturally, they all wanted one of their own. So, the initial plan to develop a one-off version was raised to 20. Each car takes about 18 months to complete.

It is known that most of the 20 Mercedes-AMG G63 Cabriolet have already been sold. In an interview with Motor1, Al Bakry revealed that he is currently waiting for the last customer to place a deposit. Therefore, “latecomer” customers who want to own this special AMG G63 will have to buy a used car. But don’t expect to buy it at a lower price.

According to Al Bakry, the owner of the China Blue model seen in this article received an offer double the starting price of $1.3 million, but the owner immediately declined.
