In 2023, the Vietnamese car market became lively with the presence of a series of new car models, spread across all segments from cheap mini cars to luxury SUVs.

Among them, there are many car models that have been hyped up for a whole year but ended up being delayed, leaving many disappointed customers.

Here are the car models that Vietnamese customers have missed out on in 2023:

Suzuki Jimny

Rumors about its arrival in Vietnam have been circulating for a long time, but the Suzuki Jimny, also known as the “peanut”, has not yet set an official release date. Currently, some dealers are speculating that the car will make its debut in March 2024.

Earlier, the Suzuki Jimny received a license from the vehicle registration department on July 12, 2023. The certificate shows that the Suzuki Jimny tested in Vietnam was imported completely from Japan and belongs to the GLX AT (automatic) version. The Suzuki Jimny is available in both 3-door and 5-door models. The tested version is the 3-door variant.

In this version, the SUV model has dimensions of 3,480 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width, 1,720 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,250 mm. The exterior of the car has a rugged style, reminiscent of SUV models like the Land Rover Defender or the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

According to information from sales consultants, the Suzuki Jimny in the Vietnamese market will have a starting price of 789 million VND for the single-tone version, including colors: White, Silver, Black, Gray, Pearl White, and Blue.

Meanwhile, the two-tone version is priced at 799 million VND, including colors: Green-Black, Gold-Black, and Pearl White-Black. Only 150 Suzuki Jimny cars were sold in the Vietnamese market this year.

Powering the Suzuki Jimny is a 1.5L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces a maximum power of 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque. Notably, the Suzuki Jimny is perhaps the only small-sized high-riding car in its segment to be equipped with a four-wheel drive system, limited-slip differential, multiple drive modes, and comes with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

MG7

In July, there were rumors that the MG7 would be launched in the Vietnamese market in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, by the end of 2023, SAIC Motor – the distributor and importer of MG cars in Vietnam – has not released any information about this car.

According to sales consultants, the MG7 will be available in Vietnam in 2 versions: STD (Standard) and LUX (Luxury), with an expected price range of 750 million VND.

According to speculations, the MG7 will be available in Vietnam with two engine options, similar to the Chinese market. The first option is a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with a power output of 261 horsepower and 405 Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed manual transmission. The second option is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with 180 horsepower and 298 Nm of torque, combined with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Both versions will come with 4 driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, and X-MODE.

MG HS 2023

Similar to the MG7, from mid-2023, many dealers also started taking deposits for the MG HS and promised to launch the car in August, but it has not been seen yet. Dealers revealed that MG HS 2023 has completed the registration procedure in Vietnam and is only waiting for the official launch.

Being completely imported from Thailand, there is a high chance that MG HS 2023 will also have two engine options.

The first option is a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum power output of 162 horsepower and a maximum torque of 250 Nm at 1,750-4,500 RPM. It is coupled with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

The second option is a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with the same 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine as above and an electric motor, resulting in a total power output of 284 horsepower and a maximum torque of 480 Nm. Equipped with a 16.6 kW lithium-ion battery, the vehicle can travel up to 67 km on electric power alone.

Omoda 5

Although information about Omoda 5 being available in Vietnam has been circulating since last year, this Chinese compact-sized CUV has not been officially launched yet. However, the Omoda 5 has been displayed publicly in Vietnam for feedback and suggestions from industry professionals and consumers. Recently, the Chinese automaker has also revealed some information about the equipment list of Omoda 5.

Specifically, the Omoda 5 in the Vietnamese market is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque at 1,750-4,500 RPM. It has an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and a fuel consumption rate of 7.1 liters per 100 km.

The car comes with various advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive headlights.

The manufacturer has not announced the selling price, but there have been rumors that the Omoda 5 will be available in Vietnam in three versions: COM, LUX, and PRE, with an expected price range of 699 – 749 and 799 million VND.

Jaecoo 7

Similar to the Omoda 5, the Jaecoo 7 has also been publicly displayed in Vietnam to gather feedback and suggestions from industry professionals and consumers before its official launch.

Currently, there is not much information available about this car model, except that it is the “twin” version of the Chery TJ-1, which was introduced during the Chery Night event in China on April 7.

The car will be available with two versions: 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive.

The fuel consumption rate of the 2-wheel drive version is 6.98 liters per 100 km, and the fuel consumption rate of the 4-wheel drive version is 7.48 liters per 100 km. The 4-wheel drive version will also provide multiple driving modes such as snow, mud, and sand to conquer different terrains. In the future, the PHEV variant, the Chery Jaecoo 7, will impress with a fuel consumption rate of only 1 liter per 100 km.

Haima 8S

On December 17, the Chinese automaker Haima officially introduced two all-new MPVs in Vietnam, the Haima 7X and 7X-E. Currently, the company is preparing to launch another C-segment SUV called Haima 8S in Vietnam.

Accordingly, the car will be available in 3 versions, with an expected price range of 600 – 700 million VND.

The car is equipped with a host of modern safety features, including 6 airbags, front and rear sensors, a surround-view camera, electronic stability control, and hill start assist/ hill descent control. The top-of-the-line version also features intelligent cruise control, lane change assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and lane departure warning.

In its home market of China, this SUV is powered by a 1.6L turbocharged GDI engine with a choice of a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. However, when distributed in Vietnam, the Haima S8 will only come with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Skoda Octavia and Superb

Since October 2022, the Czech automaker Skoda has signed a cooperation agreement with TC Motor to distribute 4 models in Vietnam, including the Kodiaq, Karoq, Superb, and Octavia.

However, as of now, only the Kodiaq and Karoq models have been launched. Users are still looking forward to the release of the Superb and Octavia models, which belong to the D-segment and C-segment sedans in Vietnam. Currently, information about these two sedans is limited, making many users curious.
