The Mazda CX-5 is the best-selling and most popular model, with the Japanese brand selling 365,135 units last year. Now, the third generation will soon hit the U.S. market before other markets worldwide.
According to Drive, the official launch of the new CX-5 has not yet been announced, but the Japanese automaker said the model will be available at dealerships along with the CX-50 and full-size SUV CX-90. In addition, the mid-size crossover will retain its 4-cylinder engine configuration, front-wheel drive, and optional all-wheel drive.
The third-generation CX-5 is expected to feature a hybrid drivetrain, similar to the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla Cross. Toyota owns a 5% stake in Mazda and the two brands have also collaborated on producing some models such as the Mazda3 hybrid. In the U.S. market, both the Corolla Cross and Mazda3 are assembled at the Mazda Toyota plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
Prior to this, Mazda announced plans to produce 3 fully electric models, 5 plug-in hybrid models, and 3 hybrid models by 2025, but has not specified which models will be equipped with these drivetrains. There have also been rumors of some rotary engine-powered hybrid cars. Mazda has hinted that they could equip the CX-30 with a rotary engine in the U.S. market and has filed a patent for a plug-in hybrid sports car with a rotary engine.
Unlike previous rotary engine-powered models, the internal combustion engine will not provide power to the CX-30. Instead, it will function to generate 17.8 kWh for recharging the battery pack, providing an operating range of 85 km. Jeff Guyton, Mazda’s North America CEO, said the automaker does not rule out a return to the U.S. market, but the brand is prioritizing the launch of the CX-30 in Europe and Japan.
The CX-70, a two-row version of the CX-90, will bring Mazda a complete SUV lineup, including the CX-5, in the near future.
