Porsche plans to extend the life cycle of the Macan model with an internal combustion engine for a few more years, along with the upcoming Macan EV. Unfortunately, this will not be possible in the European market as the German automaker is reportedly forced to stop production of the ICE version in 2024 due to stricter new cybersecurity regulations from the European Union (EU).

The first generation of the Porsche Macan was introduced in 2014. After two facelifts in 2016 and 2021, this model still complies with the EU cybersecurity regulations that will take effect on July 1, 2024. To date, it is still the best-selling Porsche model in Europe. The change in regulations has made it impossible for automakers to comply, resulting in a significant decrease in profit.
A Porsche spokesperson has confirmed this information to Automobilewoche magazine that the Macan will cease sales in the EU in spring 2024. The spokesperson explained that the necessary upgrades to ensure compliance with the new regulations would be complex and costly.
The spokesperson for the German sports car brand said: “Implementing this directive not only requires technical adjustments, such as in control units, but also fundamentally changes processes in the development phase. For example, the cybersecurity management system will have to be developed and certified as safe for the future.”
The goal of the new cybersecurity regulations imposed by the European Union is to protect the electronic structure of vehicles from potential hacker attacks. Many other models from the VW Group were affected by this change, such as the VW e-Up, Audi TT, and Audi R8 – most of which have been discontinued. In addition, the VW Transporter T6.1 van also had to be replaced and use components sourced from the Ford Transit.
Although it will no longer be sold in the EU market, Porsche will continue to sell the Macan with internal combustion engines in other markets worldwide, including North America and Asia, at least until 2026 before the new generation is introduced or emissions regulations become more stringent in many countries.
In Vietnam, the Porsche Macan is also a popular model from the German brand, with prices ranging from 3.35 to 5.34 billion VND, including 4 different variants. This price range is higher than its competitors in the same segment, but it still has its own appeal to Porsche enthusiasts.
If sales in Europe are discontinued, the German automaker may shift production/assembly of the Macan to plants outside of Europe, including Malaysia. Currently, Porsche in Vietnam is still imported from Europe.
