Toyota is said to be very keen to have its own version of the Jimny and Swift, two iconic models of Suzuki, just as the two carmakers are sharing the Baleno and Glanza, Ertiga and Rumion, and Grand Vitara. However, Suzuki has declined and stated that these two models are indispensable in the company’s DNA and not meant for sharing as selling these models with the Toyota emblem could diminish the iconic status of both the models and the brand. “Toyota wants to badge the Jimny and Swift but we have politely declined,” said a Suzuki insider.
From some perspective, sharing the Jimny with Toyota could bring Suzuki much-needed sales, as Jimny’s sales have been dwindling after the initial excitement has faded. Suzuki India sold only 15,476 units of the Jimny from June to November 2023; in fact, in November, the sales dropped to just 1,020 units. However, despite the lower-than-expected sales of the Jimny, Suzuki has no intention of sharing the sales with Toyota just to boost the sales figures.
“This is akin to asking Toyota to let us use the Land Cruiser badge. These models are the core of our brand’s purpose, not for sharing, and both companies respect that,” said an internal source.
For similar reasons, the Swift is also no exception. However, it is understandable why Toyota, a company that only sells Suzuki’s premium products under its own brand, is interested in acquiring the popular and iconic Swift.
The partnership between Toyota and Suzuki in India, where they share models and platforms, has proven to be mutually beneficial as both Japanese carmakers have successfully capitalized on economies of scale through low-cost engineering activities. This has resulted in both companies having a significantly larger investment portfolio at various price points with steady sales growth.
