In the Indian market, Suzuki is a popular car model. In the near future, the company is planning to launch two new SUV models with internal code names Y43 and Y17.
It is known that Y43 will be positioned in the A-segment SUV, competing with the Hyundai Exter. As for Y17, it will be a large SUV model, developed based on the Suzuki Grand Vitara and using a hybrid drivetrain.
Currently, Suzuki’s product range is lacking in the A-segment SUV. That’s why the Y43 is expected to fill the gap and generate impressive sales.
The Managing Director and CEO of the joint venture Maruti Suzuki in India, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi said that the current Indian market has about 55 SUV models, but Suzuki only distributes 4 models. Therefore, the company is making every effort to expand its product range.
Previously, the joint venture Maruti Suzuki only focused on distributing and developing high ground clearance hatchback models with SUV-style design. Now, the carmaker is changing strategy, targeting true multi-purpose sports cars, like the popular Hyundai Exter or Tata Punch in India.
This change in business strategy was made after Suzuki’s large SUV segment reached 1 million units sold in 2023. With the cumulative total sales of all models, Suzuki sold more than 2 million cars in India.
Suzuki expects that the two SUV models with the code names Y17 and Y43 will contribute about 25,000 units to the annual sales of the Maruti Suzuki joint venture. Currently, the Japanese carmaker has not shared much information about the two new models. It is only known that the Y17 model may be launched in 2025, with an expected price ranging from 1.5 – 2.5 million Rupee (equivalent to 438 – 730 million VND). As for the A-segment SUV model Y43, it may be launched later, around 2026 – 2027.
