LG, the leading provider of telecommunications electronic devices, recently announced that the company is developing an extremely lightweight transparent film that has the “weight” to replace the shark fin antennas commonly seen on cars today.
Transmitting and receiving devices with a design similar to shark fins or a regular stick attached to the rear roof of cars have been around for decades and have become familiar in many car models. These devices allow cars to easily connect to 5G, global positioning satellite systems, Bluetooth, etc.
Despite being important equipment, car antennas negatively affect aesthetics and slightly reduce the aerodynamic capabilities of electric cars.
To address this issue, LG – one of the leading global electronics companies – is researching a solution to replace car antennas. The company has collaborated with the glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Sekurit to develop a “transparent antenna”.
LG’s integrated transparent antenna will be a film-like shape developed from more than 80 patents of the company, such as transparent electrode technology.
This transparent antenna can be placed on the windshield or sunroof. This design not only enhances the aesthetics of the car but also improves the aerodynamic capabilities of electric car models.
In the past, General Motors (GM) also integrated this equipment into the windshield. However, there are still many drawbacks that led the company to abandon this experiment.
According to the plan, LG will introduce this new antenna at the CES 2024 exhibition in mid-January. The company has not yet revealed which car model will be the first to adopt this new antenna.
