Recently, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan revealed that the company will soon introduce an extremely modern chassis that will make Volvo more independent in developing new models in the future.

Currently, Volvo’s small models like the XC40 and C40 are using the CMA chassis jointly developed with Geely. Other models like the Volvo MPV EM90 also use Geely’s SEA chassis. Sharing this chassis causes Volvo’s cars to be labeled as “Chinese cars” and not highly regarded by consumers.

That is why Volvo is researching and developing its own exclusive chassis to separate itself from the Chinese parent company, Geely.

This new chassis is developed based on the second-generation SPA chassis (SPA 2) currently used on the Volvo EX90.

The biggest difference between the new chassis and all of Volvo’s old chassis comes from the software. While the old chassis platform is a mechanical frame, the new chassis has a close connection with software.

It can be understood that Volvo’s new chassis models will be like “4-wheeled smartphones”.

To develop this new chassis system, Volvo has partnered with Nvidia – the world’s leading graphics company. Volvo will develop its own operating system (VolvoCars.OS) using Nvidia’s core computer. The advanced hardware structure allows Volvo to increase the system’s core count when upgrading the car, while enhancing the ability to analyze and process data.

Moreover, on the new chassis, a central computer alone will be able to control all the features of the car, unlike on older Volvo models (and most cars on the market) where there is only a central control system developed by the company. Other components are supplied and controlled by third parties, and then they transmit data to the central system.

In the future, Volvo expects the complete system synchronization to enable the company to implement full self-driving technology (level 5).
