As part of the Zeekr Power Day event, Zeekr – a subsidiary brand of Geely, has unveiled its self-developed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery named Golden Brick.
According to Zeekr, this new type of battery has undergone rigorous testing. The 710 kg Golden Brick battery pack was heated to a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius and immersed in saltwater for 48 hours, then frozen at -45 degrees Celsius for 8 hours.
After this harsh test, the electric vehicle battery still functions normally and is extremely safe.
Not stopping there, Zeekr further subjected the Golden Brick battery pack to be placed under a 22-ton truck. Then, the battery pack was dropped from a height of 10 meters to the ground. Throughout this testing process, the battery pack remained normal, with no signs of explosion or smoke.
The Golden Brick is the world’s first commercially available LFP battery with an optimized capacity of over 80%.
Currently, Zeekr has only installed this battery pack on the 007 sedan model. It is expected that this model will be launched on December 27.
The Zeekr battery pack has a volume utilization rate of up to 83.7% thanks to its compact “sandwich structure” that is optimized, ultra-thin partitions, and integrated tray design.
For comparison, in June 2022, CATL introduced the Qilin battery with NMC and CTP chemistry (cell-to-pack technology). It had a record volume utilization rate of 72% and an energy density of 255 Wh/kg. Previously, in 2019, CATL only achieved 55%. In some current technologies, a volume utilization rate of around 66% is the standard for LFP batteries.
The Golden Brick battery has a charging power of 500 kW and a maximum charging speed of 4.5C. The battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes, providing a range of 500km. At -10°C, fast charging speed increases by 25%. It also has the ability to deliver short-term power of 16C in 3 seconds. The battery casing is covered with a yellow-colored high-voltage insulation film, increasing resistance to 27%. The entire pack is also waterproof, achieving IPX8 rating.
At the Zeekr Power Day event, the Chinese automaker also announced plans for charging system installation. Zeekr plans to install an additional 1,000 charging stations by 2024 and 10,000 by the end of 2026. Currently, Zeekr has 401 fast-charging stations in China with 2,261 charging ports.
