The year 2023 marks the first time the Mitsubishi Xpander holds the “sales champion” since entering the Vietnamese market with nearly 20,000 units sold.
The Vietnamese automobile market has just experienced a turbulent year in 2023. Despite being supported by the government and businesses with registration fee incentives, or applying discount programs, purchasing power in 2023 still decreased significantly compared to 2022.
Sales reports from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) as well as Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam (HTV) show that most of the car models in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023 did not reach sales figures of over 20,000 units. Meanwhile, in 2022, there were 4 models that surpassed this milestone.
Specifically for the brands in VAMA’s report, the total sales volume until the end of December 2023 decreased by 25% compared to 2022. Passenger cars decreased by 27%; commercial vehicles decreased by 16% and specialized vehicles decreased by 56% compared to 2022.
As predicted earlier, the Mitsubishi Xpander became the best-selling model in the whole market with nearly 20,000 units. Reasonable price combined with the wave of multi-purpose vehicles booming in Vietnam has finally helped the Xpander climb up to the top of the sales chart.
Below is the list of the top 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam in 2023:
1. Mitsubishi Xpander: 19,740 units
This is the first time the Mitsubishi Xpander has topped the list of the best-selling car models since entering the Vietnamese market. Specifically, 19,740 Mitsubishi Xpander vehicles were delivered to consumers in Vietnam in 2023. In December, this model sold 2,809 units. Compared to 2022, the sales of Mitsubishi Xpander decreased by 2,243 units.
2. Hyundai Accent: 17,452 units
In second place is Hyundai’s “golden egg-laying hen,” the Accent sedan. In 2023, a total of 17,452 Hyundai Accent cars were sold, significantly lower than the 22,645 units in 2022 but still enough to “overwhelm” its competitor, Vios. In December alone, 2,752 Accent units were delivered to consumers in Vietnam.
3. Mazda CX-5: 16,808 units
Mazda CX-5 is a surprising name as it ranked third in the top 10 best-selling cars in 2023. Although it had a slow start, a “dramatic” price reduction strategy in the late year helped boost the sales of the Mazda CX-5. Specifically, in the past year, a total of 16,808 Mazda CX-5 units were delivered to consumers, an increase of 4,108 units compared to 2022. This is also one of three models that experienced an increase in sales this year (along with the KIA Sonet and Ford Everest).
4. Ford Ranger: 16,085 units
In 2023, a total of 16,085 Ford Ranger units were sold, placing this “king of pickup trucks” in the fourth position, one higher than in 2022. In December alone, the American automaker sold 1,912 units. Currently, the Ranger still holds an absolute market share in the pickup truck segment in Vietnam. The shift to local assembly has made the Ranger more proactive in terms of supply. In addition, the introduction of the new generation also helps maintain its position in the market. This is also the only pickup truck model in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023.
5. Toyota Vios: 13,521 units
2023 may have been a disappointment for the Toyota Vios as the Japanese car brand only introduced an updated version with some changes in appearance and features. This has gradually made the Toyota Vios lose its appeal. As a result, the sales of this model in the past year only reached 13,521 units, about 10,000 units less than in 2022, allowing the Mitsubishi Xpander to take over the throne.
6. Kia Sonet: 11,366 units
With attractive prices, youthful design, and various equipment and features, the Kia Sonet has successfully won the hearts of Vietnamese consumers in the past year. Thanks to that, the South Korean car manufacturer sold a total of 11,366 Kia Sonet units, an increase of nearly 2,000 units compared to 2022.
7. Hyundai Creta: 10,719 units
After making a comeback in the Vietnamese market in 2022, the Hyundai Creta continued to maintain its appeal in the market. In 2023, Hyundai sold a total of 10,719 Creta units, about 1,400 units less than in 2022 but still enough to be included in the Top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023, despite a volatile market.
8. Toyota Corolla Cross: 10,485 units
Sharing the same fate as the Vios, the Toyota Corolla Cross was no longer able to maintain its growth in sales like in 2022. The appearance of a series of competing rivals and supply constraints resulted in Toyota Corolla Cross selling only 10,485 units in 2023, a decrease of nearly 11,000 units compared to 2022.
9. Ford Everest: 9,960 units
Despite having a relatively high price, the attractive offers from dealerships and the appeal of design and technology have helped the Ford Everest attract customers. As a result, a total of 9,960 Ford Everest units were sold in 2023. This is also the only representative of the 7-seater SUV segment in this list.
10. Honda City: 9,894 units
The introduction of an updated version has helped the Honda City achieve sales of 9,894 units in 2023. In addition to strengths in design, technology, and stable performance, the continuous price reductions from dealerships have contributed to the attractiveness of the Honda City to consumers.

Honda Accord: 40 Years of Automotive Excellence
Looking at the Vietnamese car market right now and humorously comparing it, we will see Camry as a well-behaved young girl, not outstanding in every aspect but easily becoming the choice of the “other half”. Teana, on the other hand, is like a dignified and tranquil woman, full of courage. Meanwhile, Mazda6 is like a hot girl, quickly attracting and captivating anyone’s gaze from the first encounter. As for Accord – with the elegance and experiences of a U30 lady, even though she is always praised by everyone, she hides something “difficult to deal with” in the minds of the majority.
