According to CNN, the number of car thefts for Hyundai and Kia has increased by over 1,000% since 2020.
Data cited from the US Highway Loss Data Institute shows that for every 1,000 insured Hyundai and Kia vehicles, approximately 1 car was stolen in the first half of 2020. This rate is still relatively normal compared to other car brands.
However, by the first half of 2023, the theft rate for these two brands has increased to 11.2 per 1,000. Meanwhile, the theft rate for all other car brands remains the same.
Furthermore, in the first half of 2023, the number of complaints regarding theft for Hyundai and Kia cars is also 7 times higher compared to other manufacturers.
The number of car thefts has increased after several TikTok videos emerged showing how to unlock and steal Hyundai and Kia cars produced from 2011 to 2021. Since then, these models have become targets for thieves.
The most commonly targeted locations for car thefts in the US are Delaware, New York, Washington, and especially Maryland.
To address this issue, Hyundai and Kia have previously released software updates to prevent car theft. They have also implemented measures such as steering wheel locks for vehicle owners. However, these solutions have not shown effectiveness as the number of car thefts continues to rise.
This issue has become so prevalent that certain auto insurance companies in specific markets have started to refuse coverage for older Hyundai and Kia models.
