In line with the overall market trend, the B-SUV segment also experienced significant growth in December 2023. Most of the popular models in this segment saw improved sales leading up to the Lunar New Year, with the exception of the Mazda CX-30.

SUV B-Segment Sales Chart in December 2023 (units: vehicles)

Hyundai Creta: 1,953 vehicles

December 2023 witnessed a strong surge in sales for the Korean Hyundai Creta, with 1,953 vehicles sold, representing a 60.3% increase compared to the previous month. With this result, the Hyundai Creta took the lead in the B-SUV segment and also entered the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in December 2023.

For the whole year 2023, Hyundai Creta achieved a sales figure of 10,719 vehicles, a decrease of 11.3%. However, it still remained the best-selling B-SUV in the country, surpassing the former champion Toyota Corolla Cross. Additionally, the Creta was the second best-selling Hyundai model in Vietnam, second only to the Accent.

Hyundai Creta

The success of the Hyundai Creta can be attributed to its stylish design, compact size with a spacious interior, and relatively well-equipped and safe features. Furthermore, the price of the Creta is considered reasonable within its segment, ranging from 640 to 740 million VND.

Toyota Yaris Cross: 1,558 vehicles

Similar to November 2023, the second best-selling B-SUV in the final month of the year was the Toyota Yaris Cross. The Toyota B-SUV achieved a sales figure of 1,558 vehicles, representing a 42.6% increase. This can be attributed to the “deep” promotional program offering a 100% vehicle registration fee exemption and 2 years of insurance for the Yaris Cross in December 2023.

Toyota Yaris Cross

The Toyota Yaris Cross was introduced to Vietnam in September 2023 and quickly achieved a relatively high cumulative sales figure of 3,065 vehicles, surpassing familiar faces such as the Mazda CX-30 and CX-3. Starting from the beginning of 2024, the vehicle’s price has been adjusted to a lower starting price of only 650 million VND. This move by Toyota Vietnam is expected to boost the sales performance of the Yaris Cross.

Although it is not the cheapest B-SUV in the market, the Toyota Yaris Cross boasts a good range of features even in its standard version. There is minimal difference between the petrol and hybrid variants of this B-SUV in terms of convenience and safety features, with the main distinction being in the engine choice.

Kia Seltos: 1,275 vehicles

The remarkable growth of the Toyota Yaris Cross pushed the Kia Seltos down to third place in the B-SUV segment in December 2023. The Seltos achieved a sales figure of 1,275 vehicles, representing a 20.9% increase.

Kia Seltos

For the whole year 2023, the Kia Seltos also ranked third in the segment with a sales figure of 9,663 vehicles, lower than both the Hyundai Creta and Toyota Corolla Cross. Compared to 2022, the sales of this Korean model decreased by 22% and it dropped out of the top 10 best-selling cars in the overall market in 2023. The Seltos is currently the second best-selling Kia model in Vietnam, second only to the Sonet.

Honda HR-V: 692 vehicles

Similar to the aforementioned three competitors, the Honda HR-V also had a successful December 2023 with 692 vehicles sold, representing a 56.2% increase. The year-to-date sales figure of the HR-V stands at 3,804 vehicles, ranking fourth in the B-SUV segment. HR-V is the third best-selling Honda model in Vietnam, behind the City and CR-V.

Honda HR-V

In contrast to the other competitors, the sales of the Honda HR-V in 2023 have experienced strong growth compared to 2022, reaching 68.6%. This is a noteworthy achievement considering the HR-V is not a budget model, with prices ranging from 699 to 871 million VND for the three versions.

The Honda HR-V offers advantages such as a youthful and sporty design, relatively spacious interior, adequate convenience features, and standard ADAS active safety features. Additionally, the engine performance and driving experience are strong points of the HR-V, similar to other Honda models.

Toyota Corolla Cross: 423 vehicles

In December 2023, the Toyota Corolla Cross continued to be overshadowed by its South Korean competitors and even its sibling, the Yaris Cross, with a sales figure of 423 vehicles, representing a 19.1% increase. Continuous low sales figures in the second half of 2023 have led to the loss of the best-selling B-SUV title in Vietnam to the Hyundai Creta.

Toyota Corolla Cross

Compared to the South Korean competitor, the Toyota Corolla Cross has a cumulative sales figure that is 234 vehicles lower. Sales for the whole year 2023 decreased by 51.1% to 10,485 vehicles.

In the first half of 2023, the Toyota Corolla Cross maintained its leading position and consistently achieved the highest sales figures in the segment. However, in the latter months of the year, the model lost its appeal and consistently ranked behind the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and even the Honda HR-V. The introduction of the Yaris Cross in the same segment at a lower price has increased the pressure on the Corolla Cross.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is currently priced between 760 and 955 million VND.

Mazda CX-3: 240 vehicles

In December 2023, Mazda sold 240 CX-3 vehicles, a 152.7% increase compared to the previous month. This is the highest growth rate among B-SUVs in the past month. The positive result can be attributed, in part, to the decrease in price for the Mazda CX-3 and the introduction of a new base version with a price of only 524 million VND, making it the cheapest in the segment. However, the cumulative sales figure for this model in 2023 remains modest at 1,534 units, a decrease of 20.8% compared to 2022.

Mazda CX-3

At the beginning of January 2024, the price of the Mazda CX-3 was once again adjusted, but this time it increased instead of decreased. Specifically, all versions have increased in price by 10 million VND, ranging from 534 to 654 million VND.

Mazda CX-30: 102 vehicles

The Mazda CX-30 was the worst-performing model in the B-SUV segment in December 2023, with only 102 vehicles sold, a decrease of 55.4%. This is the only B-SUV in the segment that experienced a decline in sales in December 2023.

Mazda CX-30

Throughout 2023, a total of 1,623 CX-30 vehicles were sold, a decrease of 10.4% compared to 2022. This is not surprising as even popular models such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos experienced a decrease in sales in the previous year.

Similar to the CX-3, the Mazda CX-30 has experienced continuous price adjustments. In late 2023, the price of this model increased by 25 million VND for both versions, reaching 689 – 729 million VND. In early 2024, the price of the Mazda CX-30 increased by another 10 million VND to 699 million VND for the 2.0L Luxury version and 739 million VND for the 2.0L Premium version. The new prices are expected to have an impact on the sales performance of this B-SUV.
