On January 13, 2024, as part of a state visit to Vietnam, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the VinFast Electric Car and Electric Motorcycle Manufacturing Complex in Haiphong and had direct experience with the high-end electric car models of the Vietnamese brand.
Prior to that in Hanoi, President Joko Widodo and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with businesses that are collaborating on production and business in both countries, including VinFast and GSM.
Welcoming President Indonesia, Chairman of Vingroup and Global CEO of VinFast, Pham Nhat Vuong, personally drove President Joko Widodo to visit the electric car production factory at the world-class modern manufacturing complex of VinFast.
After visiting the factory and learning about the VinFast electric car models, President Widodo expressed his joy in visiting the factory and was impressed by the quality and class of the VinFast vehicles. The President mentioned that he will create conditions for VinFast to complete the investment procedures for production and business in the Indonesian market.
According to the announced plan, VinFast is expected to invest a minimum of 1.2 billion USD in Indonesia in the long term. Alongside distributing imported cars from Vietnam in the initial phase, VinFast will invest 200 million USD to build an electric vehicle manufacturing plant with an estimated output of 30,000 to 50,000 cars per year in Indonesia.
In Hanoi on the same morning, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, along with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, met with businesses that are investing and operating in the two countries. During the working session, VinFast and GSM reported to the leaders of the two countries regarding the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesia’s leading technology company – PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (the company that owns the Gojek transport service application platform).
The cooperation between the three companies aims to promote green transportation in Indonesia by supporting Gojek drivers to switch to using electric vehicles and providing Indonesian consumers with the opportunity to experience the 5-star Green SM mobility service with environmentally-friendly electric cars from VinFast. In addition to VinFast’s investment plan, GSM also announced plans to invest up to 900 million USD in Indonesia in the near future.
Through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Gojek – the leading e-commerce and transportation service application platform in Indonesia, VinFast and GSM demonstrate their strong desire to contribute to the goal of reducing transportation emissions that the Indonesian government is pursuing. The agreement also opens up opportunities for cooperation and marks a new milestone for VinFast and GSM in expanding their operations to the international market in 2024.
