VnExpress newspaper hosted the Car Awards 2023 Gala on January 14th.

Car Awards is the leading professional program in Vietnam for voting and honoring outstanding automotive products. It is organized annually by VnExpress newspaper since 2021 to build a reliable and systematic reference source, synthesized from evaluations by top experts and experienced users.

In its third year, Car Awards continues to demonstrate its vision of the most prestigious annual automotive award and the most anticipated one in the year. Its goal is to ensure a tight integration of professionalism and objectivity while being truly close to users and reflecting the most accurate consumer habits in the Vietnamese automotive market.

Car Awards 2023 was officially launched in July 2023 with a series of exciting programs, bringing diverse experiences for consumers and car enthusiasts nationwide:

“Car of the Year” Voting Program – The highlight of Car Awards 2023

Considered the focus of activities in the Car Awards 2023 ecosystem, this year’s “Car of the Year” voting program includes 3 award categories: “Car of the Year by segment”, “New Star”, and “Car of the Year for the whole market”.

Outstanding car models in the Vietnamese market are evaluated by the Expert Panel based on a rigorous scoring system to ensure objectivity and fairness. The Expert Panel consists of journalists and automobile evaluation experts who are highly respected by users.

“Car of the Year by segment”

“Car of the Year by segment” is an award honoring outstanding car models in the overall market and specific segments in 2023. The scored cars must be launched from December 2022 to November 2023. To ensure thorough product experience, car models introduced in the year but have not been delivered to customers or have a limited number of deliveries will not be nominated.

At the same time, to ensure competitiveness, Car Awards will only honor “Car of the Year” in segments with at least three launched cars. By the end of November 2023, there are 6 segments in the Vietnamese market that meet this criteria, including: B-segment sedans, B-segment crossovers, C-segment crossovers, D-segment SUV/Crossovers, small-sized luxury SUVs, and mid-sized luxury SUVs.

The scored cars are evaluated based on over 40 criteria in 7 groups: Exterior; Interior; Convenience; Driving support; Performance; Safety technology; and Operating cost. To be closer to the market trend, this year, the criterion of “sales volume” will be used as an additional indicator for evaluation when cars have the same highest score in their segment or the whole market. The car with better average monthly sales will have an advantage to become the car of the year in its segment or in the whole market.

In the third year, Car Awards 2023 continues to apply the “importance coefficient” formula, reflecting the importance of factors for users’ car purchase decisions. Each criterion is scored from 0-5 (0.5 steps), then multiplied by the “importance coefficient” ranging from 1-3. Accordingly, very important criteria are multiplied by a coefficient of 3, moderately important criteria are multiplied by a coefficient of 2, and less important criteria are multiplied by a coefficient of 1. The coefficients for each criterion will vary between gasoline/diesel vehicles – electric vehicles and luxury cars – standard cars. For example, safety technology has a coefficient of 3 for all types of cars, while interior material has a coefficient of 2 for standard cars and a coefficient of 3 for luxury cars.

Each car model will receive a maximum of 400 points after being scored on all criteria and multiplied by the corresponding coefficients. The car model with the highest score will become the Car of the Year in its segment.

“New Star”

“New Star” receives significant attention from users and car enthusiasts at Car Awards. This is a non-scored category, selected by the Organizing Committee to honor new car models that have made a unique mark in the Vietnamese automotive industry, featuring advanced technologies and highly rated by customers.

“Car of the Year for the whole market”

This is the grand award of Car Awards 2023, selected by the Organizing Committee from the top-ranked car models in each segment, as well as car models in non-ranked segments (with only 1-2 cars launched in the year).

The Jury Board selects the awarded car models based on the following criteria:

Outstanding performance of the product within the segment

Trend update level, triggering demand

Customer accessibility within the segment

The Organizing Committee has the final decision-making role in the event of a tie between two or more car models.
