Yesterday, on January 19, 2024, Mazda announced on its homepage that it will cease sales of the Mazda6 model in the domestic market of Japan. As of mid-April 2024, this model will officially be discontinued in the land of the rising sun.

In the Japanese market, the Mazda6 model is currently available in both sedan and station wagon styles. Both versions will be discontinued, primarily due to declining sales in the sedan and station wagon segment, while SUVs are becoming increasingly popular.

Introduced in May 2002, the Mazda6 was formerly known as the Atenza. This mid-size car represents Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” philosophy and embodies all the characteristics of the brand.

So far, the Mazda6 has accumulated a total sales volume of 226,437 units in the Japanese market. This number is even lower than the sales results of the Mazda CX-5 in one year. In the fiscal year ended in March 2023 alone, the Mazda CX-5 achieved sales of nearly 345,000 units in the global market.

The question arises as to which model will fill the void left by the Mazda6 in the Japanese market. Kazuyoshi Todo, Domestic Sales Director of Mazda Japan, stated that the Mazda3 will take over the role of the Mazda6 Sedan. Meanwhile, the Mazda6 Station Wagon will be replaced by SUV models in the CX product lineup.

Therefore, the Mazda6 will be the second Mazda model to be discontinued in Japan recently, following the Mazda CX-8. In December 2023, the Mazda CX-8 production line for the Japanese market was also closed down.

Prior to Japan, the Mazda6 has been discontinued in other major markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom due to low sales. Additionally, this is not the only mid-size D-segment sedan that has disappeared from the Japanese market in recent times. In 2023, Toyota discontinued the Camry model in the domestic market due to unsatisfactory sales performance.

The Honda Accord, in fact, was also discontinued in Japan but made a comeback in 2023. In the near future, Honda’s sedan line will be one of the rare choices for the Japanese when they want to buy a D-segment sedan.

In the Japanese market, the Mazda6 is currently available with 3 engine options. The first is a 2.2L inline 4-cylinder diesel engine. The second is a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine. And finally, a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Despite the variety of engines, this sedan model still loses its appeal as Japanese customers are shifting towards SUVs.

In addition to the US, UK, and Japan, the Mazda6 will continue to be sold in other markets. In Vietnam, this D-segment sedan also has a relatively low sales volume. Throughout 2023, only 1,094 Mazda6 units were sold in Vietnam, a decrease of 15.1% compared to 2022. Despite its affordable price range, starting from 779 – 914 million VND, the Mazda6 has not been able to improve its sales performance and surpass its rival, the Toyota Camry.
