Mazda recently announced a collaboration with Toyota to develop automotive software and hardware in the face of a challenging economy.
In the era of technology, the overall entertainment and control system of vehicles is becoming increasingly important. The development and upgrading of these software systems require significant costs, reaching up to $2 billion per year.
For a big automaker like Toyota, this amount is not a problem. However, for Mazda, it is quite challenging. Therefore, in the future, Mazda will utilize Toyota’s software and hardware to maximize cost savings and reduce the burden of development costs by 70% to 80%.
In the short term, the two companies will collaborate in areas such as control systems, infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, electronic control units (ECUs), and wiring harness systems. Mazda’s future electric vehicles, starting from 2027, will resemble Toyota vehicles by 90%.
This is not the first time Toyota and Mazda have collaborated. They have had a partnership in the past and have jointly developed various technologies, from shared powertrains to electrification. With this latest announcement, it seems that Mazda’s future electric models will share many characteristics with Toyota’s models.
