Mazda6 – one of Mazda’s iconic sedans will officially be discontinued from April 2024.

On January 19, 2024, Mazda announced that it will stop selling the Mazda6 in the Japanese market from April 2024. Previously, this mid-size sedan had also been discontinued in North America in 2021 and the UK last year.

The manufacturer did not give a specific reason for the discontinuation of the Mazda6. However, the poor sales of this mid-size sedan are believed to be the main reason for the decision.

The Mazda6, formerly known as the Atenza, was first introduced in May 2002. This mid-size model represents Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” design philosophy. The current Mazda6 belongs to the 3rd generation, introduced in 2012.

Kazuyoshi Todo, Sales Director of Mazda Japan, commented: “Atenza and Mazda6 have been beloved by many customers, with cumulative sales of 226,437 units in Japan,” said Mr. Todo. “The new crossover models will replace the Mazda6, and we will continue to bring customers an exciting driving experience that is in line with the modern era.”

The discontinuation of the Mazda6 highlights the decline of sedans compared to SUVs and crossovers. High-riding vehicles dominate the automotive industry, being favored by consumers and providing higher profits for car manufacturers due to their higher prices.

Although the Mazda6 production line will be closing in April, customers can still place orders for this sedan until it runs out of stock. The company does not have a direct replacement plan for the Mazda6, but some sources suggest that the company is developing a rear-wheel-drive sedan using the platform of its large SUV models.
