For many years, the B-segment sedan has consistently been the best-selling segment in Vietnam. In 2023, this trend continues with 4 B-segment sedans in the top 5 best-selling sedans in Vietnam.
Hyundai Accent
In 2023, Vietnamese customers purchased a total of 17,452 Hyundai Accent sedans. Despite a 22.9% decrease in sales compared to 2022, the Hyundai Accent surpassed the Toyota Vios to become the best-selling B-segment sedan last year. It also remains the most popular sedan in the Vietnamese market in 2023. With the Hyundai brand, the Accent is the most sought-after sedan model.
Hyundai Accent
The Hyundai Accent’s success can be attributed to its appealing design, convenient features, adequate safety features within the segment, and affordable price range, ranging from 426.1 – 542.1 million Vietnamese dong for 4 variants. Additionally, because this Korean model is assembled domestically, it is eligible for a 50% reduction in registration fees implemented by the government in the second half of 2023.
Some notable features of this Korean model include an 8-inch infotainment screen, 6 speakers, automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, smart trunk control, automatic headlights, and remote engine start. Under the hood of the Hyundai Accent lies the Kappa 1.4L MPI gasoline engine, which generates a maximum power of 100 horsepower and a maximum torque of 132 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota Vios
The Toyota Vios was once considered the “national car” of Vietnam as it consistently topped the overall market’s sales charts for many years. However, in 2023, this B-segment sedan was dethroned, achieving only 13,521 cumulative sales, a 42.5% decrease compared to 2022. With these results, the Toyota Vios conceded its dominance in the B-segment sedan market, both within its own category and the sedan market in general, to its rival, the Hyundai Accent.
Toyota Vios
One possible reason for the decline in popularity of the Toyota Vios is its controversial facelift design. The updated version of this model was exclusively introduced in Vietnam in May 2023, while other Southeast Asian markets had already witnessed a complete redesign in terms of both exterior and interior features.
Moreover, the Toyota Vios has a higher price range compared to the Hyundai Accent, ranging from 479 – 592 million Vietnamese dong for 3 variants. However, the updated version of the Vios does offer additional features, such as LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, sportier seats, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a larger 9-inch touchscreen display with smartphone connectivity, and USB Type-C ports for rear passengers. Notably, the Toyota Vios has also improved its safety features, including 7 airbags, Pre-Collision System (PCS), and Lane Departure Alert (LDA).
In Vietnam, the Toyota Vios is equipped with a 4-cylinder inline gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.5L, capable of generating a maximum power of 107 horsepower and a maximum torque of 140 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Honda City
The third best-selling sedan in Vietnam in 2023 is the B-segment Honda City. Specifically, the Honda City ranked 3rd within the sedan segment with a total of 9,894 units sold, a decrease of 32.6% compared to 2022. Not only is the Honda City 3rd in the sedan segment, but it also made it into the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam, albeit with the lowest position. With the Honda brand, the City naturally becomes the best-selling sedan model.
Honda City
Despite the decline in sales from 2022, the Honda City still maintains impressive business results, thanks to its relatively higher price range compared to most competitors, except for the Volkswagen Virtus. The Honda City’s current prices range from 559 – 609 million Vietnamese dong for 3 variants.
Similar to the Toyota Vios, the Honda City received a mid-cycle update in the past year. Introduced in July 2023, the updated version of the Honda City impressed customers with the standard Honda Sensing active safety system package and newly added rear disc brakes.
In addition to its comprehensive safety features, the Honda City receives high praise for its appealing design, spacious interior, and smooth driving experience. Under the hood, the Honda City is powered by a 4-cylinder i-VTEC gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.5L, capable of generating a maximum power of 119 horsepower and a maximum torque of 145 Nm. The engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Mazda3
The only C-segment sedan that made it into the top 5 best-selling sedans in Vietnam in 2023 is the Mazda3, with a total of 6,718 units sold. Compared to the results in 2022, the sales of this model also decreased by 31.5%. However, this Japanese model continues to dominate the C-segment sedan market, replacing the Kia K3. With the Mazda brand, the Mazda3 is the second best-selling model, following the CX-5.
Mazda3
The Mazda3 stands out with its design that suits the taste of Vietnamese customers, particularly women. In addition, the Mazda3 offers competitive features and safety equipment compared to its competitors, while maintaining an affordable price range, ranging from 579 – 729 million Vietnamese dong for 5 variants. With this price range, the Mazda3 is currently one of the most affordable sedan models in the C-segment in Vietnam.
Under the hood, the Mazda3 is equipped with a 4-cylinder inline gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.5L, producing a maximum power of 110 horsepower and a maximum torque of 145 Nm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Mitsubishi Attrage
The fifth best-selling sedan in the Vietnamese sedan market is the Mitsubishi Attrage. This is the fourth B-segment sedan to appear on this list with a total of 5,050 units sold, a 29.9% decrease compared to 2022. With this sales performance, the Attrage is currently the second best-selling model under the Mitsubishi brand in Vietnam, following the Xpander.
Mitsubishi Attrage
The Mitsubishi Attrage stands out with its attractive price range, starting from 380 – 490 million Vietnamese dong. It is one of the most affordable B-segment sedans on the market today. As a trade-off for its affordability, the Attrage has a design that is not particularly eye-catching and its features and safety equipment are not as advanced as those of its competitors.
The Mitsubishi Attrage offers notable features such as automatic on/off LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and power-adjustable/retractable/signal-integrated side mirrors in the high-end variant. It also offers automatic air conditioning, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather seats, and a 4-speaker audio system.
In addition to its affordability, one advantage of the Mitsubishi Attrage is its fuel-efficient and relatively durable engine, known for its reliability, making it suitable for those purchasing cars for commercial use. Under the hood, the Mitsubishi Attrage is equipped with a 3-cylinder MIVEC gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.2L, producing a maximum power of 77 horsepower and a maximum torque of 100 Nm. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or INVECS continuously variable transmission.
