According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the total sales of vehicles in May did not show any improvement, reaching 20,726 units, a decrease of 8% compared to the previous month. However, the D-segment sedan segment showed encouraging signs as it sold 400 units in May, an increase of 5.5% compared to April.
Kia K5 accelerates but still loses to Mazda6
In May, Thaco delivered 103 units of the Mazda6 to customers, an increase of 5 units compared to the previous month. However, this number is still 32.6% lower compared to the same period last year. Since the beginning of 2023, the Mazda6 has maintained sales of over 100 units per month, surpassing the Kia K5 in terms of sales.
In the first five months of the year, the Mazda6 sold 512 units, ranking second in the D-segment sedan market after the Toyota Camry.

The steady growth in sales of the Mazda6 is mainly due to the large promotional program offered by the company in the early months of the year. In June, customers who purchase the Mazda6 will receive full support for pre-tax fees. The 2.0 Luxury and 2.0 Premium versions are discounted by 100 million VND, bringing the listed prices to 799 million VND and 849 million VND respectively.
The 2.5 Premium version has the highest discount of up to 125 million VND. Therefore, after applying the discount, the price of this car model is only 924 million VND.
The Kia K5 also recorded a surprising increase in sales in May despite the sluggish market. The sales volume of this sedan model reached 91 units, an increase of nearly 60% compared to the previous month.

As of May, the total sales of the Kia K5 reached 385 units, accounting for 18% of the total sales in the segment. However, after several months of average sales not exceeding 100 units per month, the overall sales of the Kia K5 in the first quarter will be difficult to surpass the Mazda6, although the gap is not too large.
In June, customers who place an order for the Kia K5 will also enjoy a discount of 100% on pre-tax fees worth up to 100 million VND.
Honda Accord also increases sales
The slowest-selling sedan in the segment also recorded positive growth in May. Specifically, Honda Vietnam sold 8 units of the Honda Accord, an increase of 2 units compared to the previous month. In the first five months of the year, Honda Vietnam sold a total of 26 Accord units, still at the bottom of the segment in terms of sales. This figure is also lower than the number of Honda Accord cars sold in May 2022.

Honda has implemented many promotional programs for this D-segment sedan to stimulate purchasing, but has not achieved the desired results. In June, customers who purchase the Honda Accord will continue to receive a discount of up to 140 million VND to clear the 2022 VIN batch. After the discount, the selling price of this D-segment sedan starts from 1,179 billion VND depending on the exterior color.
While the competitors in the same segment have shown positive signs, the national car model of this segment, the Toyota Camry, has been declining in sales since the beginning of this year. In May, the sales volume of the Toyota Camry reached 198 units, a decrease of nearly 8% compared to April. Compared to the same period last year, the number of Toyota Camry vehicles sold has decreased by 56.2%.
In June, this D-segment sedan continues to be subject to many dealers’ programs and promotions, with discounts of up to 100 million VND to stimulate purchasing. Specifically, when contacting a Toyota dealer in Ho Chi Minh City, the sales advisor stated that this sedan model is currently directly discounted by 100 million VND, bringing the price of the Camry to the range of 1-1.3 billion VND depending on the version.
