BYD’s factory in Indonesia will be built this year with an expected capacity of about 150,000 cars/year.
Earlier this year, BYD revealed plans to build an additional electric vehicle production facility in Southeast Asia, in addition to its current plant in Thailand. The Chinese automaker is targeting three countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
According to information from Auto Industriya magazine, Indonesia is the chosen location for BYD’s new factory. The information was announced at the launch event of Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal in this country.
BYD stated that the factory in Indonesia will have a total investment capital of $1.3 billion, with an expected capacity of 150,000 cars/year. The construction process will begin this year. This will be BYD’s fifth factory outside of China, alongside plants in Thailand, Uzbekistan, Brazil, and Hungary.
Recently, Indonesia has been accelerating the construction of an electric vehicle ecosystem. Before BYD, Hyundai also decided to place an electric car production line in this Southeast Asian country. Furthermore, Tesla is also considering setting up a factory here.
In 2023, BYD achieved record sales with 1.57 million pure electric cars and 1.4 million plug-in hybrid cars. This achievement made BYD the second best-selling electric car company in the world, surpassed only by Tesla with 1.8 million pure electric cars. In addition, the company also ranked among the top 10 largest automakers in the world.
In 2024, BYD aims to expand its car distribution in foreign markets. This is why the company, headquartered in Shenzhen, is actively building factories overseas. Furthermore, BYD has also begun investing in safety support features and autonomous driving technology to increase its technological autonomy.
