Owners of the Kia Carnival 2022-2024 and Sportage 2023-2024 models may hear strange noises when driving at high speeds as it could be the first warning sign that the roof rail is about to detach from the car.
Accordingly, Kia has announced a recall of 40,426 Sportage and 60,623 Carnival vehicles in the US due to a manufacturing defect that could cause the roof rail to loosen. Although the roof rail does not affect the operational safety of the vehicle, if it falls off while driving on the highway, the debris can be thrown out, posing a danger to other road users.
The Korean automaker became aware of this issue in September 2023, but the investigation proved more complex than they anticipated as most of the detached debris from the roof rail was lost.
However, after receiving a large number of complaints from customers, Kia was forced to investigate. To find out what happened, Kia intentionally installed the roof rail incorrectly on a test vehicle and found that it could come off when the car is traveling at around 145 km/h. The cause of this condition could be due to the roof rail being bonded with insufficient or excessive adhesive, or improper assembly procedures.
Kia will begin contacting affected owners from March 15, 2024, for them to bring their vehicles to the dealership for inspection. The Korean automaker will either re-attach the roof rail for customers or replace it entirely.
