Tesla is rolling out a new project called “Redwood” to introduce a compact electric crossover, positioned below the Model 3 in the company’s product lineup.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, confirmed in a financial conference call on January 24 that the company plans to start production of the next-generation electric vehicle at its Texas factory in the second half of 2025.

This electric crossover model is expected to have a price of around $25,000, significantly lower than the Model 3 (priced from $38,990). It will be one of Tesla’s key volume drivers in the future and a strategic move for the company to compete with BYD’s low-cost models.

Sources close to Tesla revealed that “Redwood” is a highly anticipated project that will enable Tesla to strengthen its position in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle market. The key to the low price of the new crossover model lies in the “third-generation electric vehicle platform” that optimizes production costs. In the future, this new platform will be applied to robotaxis and replacement models for the Model 3 and Model Y.

Reuters reported that Tesla has informed component suppliers that the production volume of the new electric crossover model could reach 10,000 vehicles per week, equivalent to about 500,000 vehicles per year. Last year, Tesla’s total production reached 1.85 million vehicles, a 35% increase compared to 2022. In May 2023, Elon Musk mentioned in a shareholder meeting that the company will introduce two new electric vehicles capable of generating a total sales volume of up to 5 million vehicles per year.
