Recently, General Motors and Honda announced the start of production of a new hydrogen fuel cell system.

According to the plan, this new generation of hydrogen fuel cells will be produced at the Honda-GM joint venture plant called Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC (FCSM), which was established in 2017 in Brownstown, Michigan.

FCSM has put a lot of time and effort into research to optimize the cost of developing and manufacturing the new generation of hydrogen fuel cells. The goal is to reduce the selling price and make hydrogen-powered cars more accessible to customers.

It is known that the new generation hydrogen fuel cell system will be priced at less than 1/3 of the previous generation on the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell 2019, which has already been discontinued. Besides the lower cost, the new hydrogen fuel cell technology promises to improve the efficiency and range of the car twice as much as the previous version.

According to the Japanese automaker, the initial production volume of these fuel cell units will be modest, at about 2,000 units per year. This measured approach reflects the current stage of hydrogen fuel cell technology, focusing on entering the initial market and developing infrastructure.

According to sources, the Honda CR-V will be one of the first models to be equipped with the new generation hydrogen fuel cell technology developed and produced by Honda and General Motors (GM).

Prior to this, Honda provided the CR-V 2024 with two electrified versions, the e:HEV (hybrid) and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), alongside a more traditional gasoline version but with significantly reduced emissions. The hydrogen-powered CR-V (PHEV) will be the third version, expected to be launched by Honda in 2024 in markets such as the United States and Japan.

In addition to GM, Honda is also collaborating with Isuzu to integrate hydrogen power into commercial vehicles. The company’s goal is to have electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles account for 100% of its global car sales by 2040.
